Free Devil Makes Three show in Berkeley
During one of the best periods of my live I was living in the attic above Cafe Pergolesi in Santa Cruz. The cafe was in the center of town and I was a young, single college kid more concerned with partying and getting laid than studying and getting A’s. Luckily for me UC Santa Cruz was on a pass/fail system at the time, so letter grades literally weren’t part of my life.
Anyway, the people who worked at the cafe were pretty cool, and other than the time they broke into our place and stole a Johnny Cash poster, we all got along just fine. My relationship with most of them consisted of me purchasing Hanson’s energy drinks and talking a little friendly shit, or late night drunk revelry when the cafe was closed and I was stumbling home from the bars. So when I heard from one of my roommates that three of the cafe workers had a band that was gonna be playing in the cafe, I said, “Who doesn’t have a band?” and didn’t think much of it.
Later that night I went downstairs to grab an energy drink in an attempt to power myself up for a long night of parties. I had forgotten that the cafe folks were playing that night and when I stepped inside, I caught the chorus of a song that went: “Thank you Jack Daniel’s/Old number seven/The Tennessee whiskey I’ll be drinking in heaven….” The band of course ended up being The Devil Makes Three and I’ve been a super fan ever since.
If you’re not doing anything on Thursday at 6pm, you can catch them for FREE at Amoeba Records in Berkeley. Otherwise you can pay to see them at the Independent January 16th (with Or, The Whale) and January 17th (with Emily Jane White).
If you’ve never heard them before, check them out here. I think you’ll dig it.
