A Great Volunteer Opportunity for MLK Day
I’m basically just cutting and pasting this from the facebook invite because there’s a ton of info and rewording it would be annoying. So if you wanna be a mensch tomorrow, please read below:
For this year’s National Day of Service and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, A Good Idea and Citizen Hope have joined forces to host a full day of service with numerous diverse volunteer events for people to get involved in. Our great partner, Joie de Vivre Hospitality, will provide us a volunteer central meeting space at the Good Hotel located at 112 7th St. (at Mission St.). At the end of this great day of service, the Mercury Lounge (1582 Folsom St.) will be hosting a mixer for everyone who served to come together to socialize and share their experiences from the day. We are also working with BayAreaBenefit.Org on this great event and distributing many of the materials they collected in their blanket and jacket drive!
The event will be broken up into two time frames. You can participate in one or both parts of the day. Families are welcome!
TO RSVP PLEASE EMAIL JARED@AGOODIDEASF.ORG OR MATTHANEYSF@GMAIL.COM.
ALL ACTIVITIES MEET AT THE GOOD HOTEL EXCEPT FOR THE GILMAN PLAYGROUND CLEAN UP.
————————————————–
2pm-5pm
The first will be from 2pm-5pm and we’ll have 4 different events to get involved in. Here are the details for the first part of the day:
1) PLAYGROUND CLEAN UP and Gardening at Gilman Playground and Park in the Bayview (Gilman and Giants Dr., near 3Com park)
2) CITY CLEAN UP – SOMA/Tenderloin – 2pm-5pm (No limit on Volunteers)
For the park clean up, email matthaneysf@gmail.com. We’ll meet at the park in the Bayview! We sent a group to this park last year and they felt that they were able to accomplish a lot. Happy to be returning this year!
For the city clean up, we’ll all start out at the Good Hotel at 2pm and then walk around the area and pick up trash to make our city look great! Gloves and trash bags will be provided to those participating. Please email matthaneysf@gmail.com if you’d like to volunteer for this event.
3) ICE CREAM SOCIAL w/ SENIORS- Canon Kip Senior Center – 1:30pm-4pm – Meet at Good Hotel (112 7th St.) (15 Volunteer Max)
We’ll be sending 15 volunteers to the Canon Kip Senior Center located at 705 Natoma St. to spend a couple of hours with the residents. We’ll be hanging out, eating some ice cream, playing a little bingo, and just connecting with some good folks. The 15 people to first respond will be the people who get to participate. We’ll ask that everyone who participates be able to show up 30 minutes early at the location for orientation. We will be providing all of the ice cream. Please email jared@agoodideasf.org if you’d like to volunteer for this event.
4) PIZZA PARTY WITH HOMELESS YOUTH – Good Pizza – 1:30pm-4pm – Meet at Good Hotel (112 7th St.) (20 Volunteers Max)
At Good Pizza, which is located inside the Good Hotel, we’ll get together 20 volunteers with some great kids from the Hamilton Family Center for some pizza and baked goods. We’ll be playing some games with the kids and are definitely open to other fun activities for this event. All of the pizza and baked goods will be provided for the event. Again we’ll ask that all volunteers get to the Good Hotel at 1:30pm for orientation. The first 20 people to sign up for this event will get to participate. To sign up for this part of the day please email jared@agoodideasf.org.

5pm-8pm
1) DIRECT OUTREACH TO HOMELESS – Meet at Good Hotel (112 7th St. at Mission) (No volunteer limit, the more the merrier!)
At 5pm, we’ll be hosting a huge direct service outreach to the members of our community who are currently homeless. We’ll be handing out warm clothes, food, hygiene products, and more. Most of these items were collected as a result of the incredible work of Bay Area Benefit! From 5pm-6pm, everyone will come together at Volunteer Central to prep all of the hand-outs and then at 6pm we’ll break off into four groups to begin serving the people in need. The four areas (which are subject to change) that we’ll be canvassing will be the Tenderloin, SOMA, the Haight, and the Transbay Terminal (1st and Mission). A Good Idea does this monthly and it’s always a fulfilling, great event. For those who would like to get even more involved, people are welcome to bring gently worn warm clothes, purchased or made food (sandwiches, chips, fruit, trail mix, candy), and hygiene products (toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine products, etc.). Please email jared@agoodideasf.org if you have any questions.

8:15pm
SOCIAL MIXER–Mercury Lounge (1582 Folsom)
Starting at 8:15pm, after everyone has come together to work hard and better our community, we’ll then get together for some discounted drinks and socializing at the Mercury Lounge. It’s always a good time connecting with those you served with throughout the day.
