Take Your Pick of FREE Movies on Divisadero

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Sadly no drive-in options.

With all the recent rain around the Bay, I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m not the only one who just wants to hibernate inside some warm cave somewhere while zoning out in front of a big screen that transports me to any magical fantasyland imaginable.

But tickets to Avatar are like $18 bucks if you want the good stuff in Digital 3D. Add in your Muni Fare and you’ve already lost a Jackson. So, save the cash and take your pick of one of two FREE movie nights on Divisadero in the Western Addition/Lower Haight/Panhandle/whatever you want to call it.

First up is Cinema Drafthouse at the Independent on Monday nights. Admission is FREE with a two-drink minimum which is still cheaper than a $10 movie ticket and they set up the room with bistro tables so you’re free to bring in neighborhood grub or a big box of sour patch kids. Showtimes are at 8pm and for the past few weeks they’ve been showing the biggest movies from 2009. So all of us cheapskates could catch up on The Hangover and Funny People. The big draw of the Independent is that, being a music venue, their sound system is awesome. I didn’t see Transformers 2, but I’d stroll in to the Indy just to hear those weird alien robot noises piped out of their PA. Upcoming shows include Paranormal Activity on Feb. 1, Zombieland on Feb. 8, and 500 Days of Summer just in time for your post-valentine’s breakup on Feb 15th. Check the calendar for more.

Or on Thursday nights, just down the street at Divisadero and Oak st, On the Corner hosts FREE movie nights on their 9′ x 12′ screen in their cozy coffee shop space. Movies start at 8pm and they offer drink and food specials and popcorn, of course. Their current movie lineup seems to lean more on the classic or artsy side, like tonight they’re showing the Coen Brothers pre-Lebowski classic The Hudsucker Proxy. More info and upcoming shows available on their site.

Andrew Dalton - Aggressive Panhandler

Andrew is an East Coast transplant from Virginia hamming it up in San Francisco without any intention of leaving. Having worked every typical job from Bike Shop Employee to Bartender to Ad Agency Hotshot, to Dotcom Layoff he now busts his ass covering the "weird things to do" beat for gracious local audiences at SFAppeal.com and rallies the Western Addy/Lower Haight/Panhandle neighborhoods into action at AggressivePanhandler.com. His work was published in a real, paper magazine one time. One day he might even figure out how to make money from it.
