Party Among the Artwork at YBCA for FREE Tonight
As art museums go, I’ve found that YBCA can be surprisingly broke ass-friendly. Actually, I think I’ve been there 4 or 5 times and I have yet to actually pay for admission to anything. But in addition to FREE first Tuesdays every month (that’d be next Tuesday, the 6th) they also throw a Big Idea Night pARTy (see what they did there?) every couple months. I’ve been to a couple of these things and I can say with some authority that it is not just some stuffy walk-around-the-galleries-eating-cheese kind of affair, this is legitimate party time. (See also, my review of a previous event back in November on the SF Appeal.)
This time around the theme is Under the Influence, which is certainly a theme I can get behind, but the spotlight is actually on Oakland’s thePeople collective who will be hosting the music all night. Aside from the museum’s auditorium turning into a big club until 2am, they’ll also be having something call “power-painting”, which sounds awesome just on principle. And of course all of the galleries will be open until 1am for you wander around if you suddenly find yourself out of breath or feel the need to try to impress your date with your commentary.
Admission is FREE and there’s a cash bar, so drinks can be a little more than your usual dive bar prices, but in the fine tradition of brokeassitude, I recommend arriving with a pleasant buzz if possible.
