FREE Produce from Hayes Valley Farm on Sunday
If you haven’t been to any of the neighborhood Farmer’s Markets in the city yet, then you’ve been missing out on some deals on fresh, local produce. My only beef with my local market at Divisadero and Grove is that I end up spending too much money because I can’t decide what I want and I end up buying 13 varieties of white peaches, yellow peaches, or white-yellow peach-nectarine organic hybrid something or others.
But more importantly, cruising the market just before the vendors close up shop had me wondering what happens to any produce that goes unsold. And, as it turns out, a lot of perfectly good produce ends up as compost or waste.
Luckily, the good people from Hayes Valley Farm and The Wigg Party have stepped up to take on the huge task of gleaning any unsold, potentially wasted produce from the Sunday markets and make it available to anyone with a totebag and the time to drop by their urban farm in the heart of Hayes Valley. Last week was the trial run of the new Fresh Produce Free-For-All and the group rounded up and gave away 1,000 lbs of produce. Half a ton of FREE food!
