Happy Memorial Day! FREE Parade and Food and Stuff!
What’s the reason for the Memorial Day season? Is it to get your first day off work since New Year’s? Is it to start wearing white shoes and white pants without looking gauche? Or perhaps it’s to barbecue and get hammered in Dolores Park? Wrong and WRONG: Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for everyone who has died in the service of this fine nation of ours. So if you have the day off after all, you should hit up the program in the Presidio.
The day kicks off with a parade at 10:30am at the Presidio’s Main Post. Then, at the National Cemetery, you’ll get a program with music, a color guard, and some speakers, including Rev. Dr. John L. Young of the Presidio Interfaith Center. If you drive in, a free shuttle service will take you from your parking spot near Main Post to the cemetery. Finally there will be a traditional 21-gun salute. Once that’s over, there will be another program, this one featuring groups that serve veterans, such as the Coming Home Project, Swords to Plowshares, and Troops to College — and REFRESHMENTS (read: FREE food) at the Presidio Chapel. It pays to be patriotic.
