Madonna Book Signing (Mr. Madonna, That Is)
Paul Madonna could be called San Francisco’s sketchiest man, but it would only apply in the utmost literal of senses. Known for his pen and ink depictions of SF streetscapes and architectural details, the artist was Mad Magazine’s first-ever art intern before snagging a weekly comic strip in the Chronicle.
There are few who know the city as well as this guy. I always imagine turning a neighborhood corner and bumping into Madonna (who happens in this fantasy to be wearing a black felt beret, sporting a thick goatee, and carrying a palette). Alas, it’s never happened, and if the man has drawn your stoop, telephone pole, curb, or cupola, it’s honestly not that much of an honor – he’s pretty much done everyone’s by now.
This Sunday, though, Madonna’s signing copies of his new book, “Everything Is Its Own Reward” and – he stresses – handing out free handmade bookmarks to boot. If you, like me, are one of this city’s Kindleless faction (or is it the iPad? I dunno), you still have a use for bookmarks. And these should be the shit.
