BA of the Week: Burrito Loving Charles Hufnagel
Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude. Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit — probably not.
Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week? Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.
Charles’ answers below are pretty funny. The dude loves burritos and wants to start a scooter gang. He also mentions the Awesome Foundation, which I’d never heard of before but which is in fact awesome. Here’s what he has to say about himself:
A Philadelphian by upbringing, my family moved to Virginia too late in the game for me to acquire a charming drawl. I came to San Francisco for the first time when I moved here with nothing but a squeaky couch bed lined up and all my possessions haphazardly stuffed in a battered mini-van. I had heard for years how amazing the city was – I had heard less about how friggin’ expensive it could be. I have no regrets! The burritos are abundant and delicious, the people mellow and the days interesting.
Read below for his great answers to my mediocre questions.
Name: Charles Edward Hufnagel
Age: 24
Occupation: Oppressed lackey/cat lady extraordinaire.
What neighborhood do you live in?: It’s a little complicated – I live in a tenement on the Mission-Potrero border.
Best money saving tip: Burritos are the most efficient and cost-effective form of nutrition.
What do you refuse to spend money on?: Artisan haircuts.
Most expensive thing you’ve ever bought: A completely unnecessary 80s synthesizer.
How’d that feel?: Decadent/glorious/slightly guilt-inducing.
Favorite cheap eat: Farolito! Or pho if I need to change it up.
Favorite dive bar: Benders or El Rio. Benders cannot be matched for location/price/alcohol content, but El Rio’s patio is pretty friggin’ sweet.
Best deal you’ve ever gotten: It’s kind of a toss-up! My awesome girlfriend made me a Purple Rain costume for my birthday. Someone hired me to camp out for 5 days for the new iPhone for $1500. The Awesome Foundation gave me $1000 to paint a few hundred cardboard boxes to look like giant building blocks and host a free castle workshop in Dolores.
Favorite free thing to do: Kitties! Help socialize them for adoption and get yer fix of adorable.
If you woke up a millionaire, what’s the first thing you’d buy?: A fleet of Vespas. A longstanding life goal has been to lead a scooter gang.
Despite not having money, do you still love your life?: IT’S PRETTY OKAY
Do you own my book?: It’ll happen someday, honest!
Best hangover cure: Delicious starchy brunch. Supplement with strategic doses of coffee and painkillers.
Are you a hipster?: I TRANSCEND SUCH PETTY LABELS
