Divisadero’s Mojo Bicycle Cafe is Closing
When Mojo Bicycle Cafe first opened, Divisadero was a rapidly changing street. The Western Addition had been seeing an influx of young white people for a number of years by that point and to reflect this, realtors started calling the neighborhood NoPa. When I lived in the neighborhood back in 2004, there wasn’t a whole lot going on in terms of eating, drinking, and nightlife on Divis other than The Independent, Beanbag Cafe, Club Waziema, The Page, Fly Bar, and Cafe Abir (RIP). But with the opening of NoPa all that changed. The stretch of Divis from Haight to Geary was suddenly the new, hot, up and coming neighborhood and businesses began flocking in.
Mojo Cafe was one of the first of these and it was a welcome addition. It was a funky idea: a bike shop and a cafe, housed under the same roof. With its friendly service and outdoor patio, Mojo quickly became a cultural center for the neighborhood. At any given moment you could walk by and see someone you knew reading a book, having a beer, or meeting up with friends. Mojo appeared at the blessed moment between San Francisco digital gold rushes when quirky ideas like a bicycle cafe seemed not only possible but necessary. Who wouldn’t want too hang out and have an espresso while getting their bike fixed? Divisadero wasn’t exorbitant then and people could open up their dream storefront and try to add something to the neighborhood without being faced with terrifying rents.
Anyways, all that said, it appears Mojo is closing. Our reader Tyler let me know so over the weekend when he tweeted me about it. Then I just googled it now and it seems Hoodline reported the story last week. Mojo’s last day is December 22nd.
It’ll be a shame to lose the place as it’s always been a wonderful spot to while away your time. I hope Remy and the staff move on to other great things and continue to create awesome places where community can gather. Thanks for the ride Mojo.
