I was just sent the following information about a new development that is supposed to be going into Hunters Point. It appears that they aren’t playing very nicely and are a threat to Archimedes Banya and Hunters Point in general. Archimedes Banya is a Russian bathhouse that has been around since 2011.  It’s been a place of relaxation and rejuvenation for an incredibly wide community. They need your help. Read their message below:

Dear Banya Family,

We are pro-affordable housing and pro-strong neighborhoods. We are fighting for Archimedes Banya and Hunters Point. A developer is attempting to build large, luxury towers all around the banya. This would be the end of our rooftop deck and fresh air. It could be the end of the banya as well.

We tried to work with the developer to reach a compromise, but in the end they ignored us and the community. We are joining our neighbors and GREENACTION for Health & Environmental Justice to demand that this project be built CORRECTLY by including:

 – REAL AFFORDABLE HOUSING (right now NONE of the proposed units are affordable for the Bayview community)– REAL ENVIRONMENTAL TESTING AND MITIGATION (they refuse to test for many types of contaminants and address real environmental impacts of this project)– REAL COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION (they ignored non-English speaking people and quietly took away a school that was supposed to be part of the project.)

We are NOT trying to stop this project. We are only insisting that they follow the well-established rules for affordable housing and public disclosure. On Tuesday Oct 16 at 3pm we are going before the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to make our case. If you can come to San Francisco City Hall please do! If not, please email or call the Mayor’s Office and the Board of Supervisors and let them know that:

You support GREENACTION for Health & Environmental Justice and Archimedes Banya’s appeal of the India Basin Environmental Impact Report.
