There are few things we love in the Bay Area more than putting on a costume and partying. And if you’re a history nerd like myself, having a specific time period to frame the outfits and celebration makes it extra fun. That’s why I’m so excited about the Art Deco Preservation Ball.
On Saturday, May 4th, the Art Deco Society of California is throwing the 35th annual installment of the Art Deco Preservation Ball and this year’s theme is “A Night in Buenos Aires – the City of Tango”. It promises to be an evening of Latin-influenced sophistication complete with music, dancing and entertainment”.
Last year I went to a party thrown by these folks celebrating the end of Prohibition, and it was a blast. I wrote about it in my Broke-Ass City column for the San Francisco Examiner. And this event sounds like it will be just as exciting if not more. Here are the evening’s activities:
– Dancing to Don Neely’s Royal Society Jazz Orchestra with vocalists Carla Normand and guest pianist Adam Swanson
– A dance performance by The Decobelles
– Sara Klotz de Aguilar at the piano
– Tango music by Seth Asarnow and Marcelo Puig
– A tango performance by Christy Cote and Eduardo Saucedo
– A portrait booth by Memento Moda
– The Preservation Awards reception
– A fabulous Silent Auction benefitting ADSC
Beyond being transported back in time to glamorous Art Deco era Buenos Aires, ADSC will also be giving out the annual preservation awards to folks who have shared in the preservation of Art Deco’s historic legacy. They are even honoring one of my favorite spots, Li Po Cocktail Lounge for restoring their awesome sign.
So put on your best time traveling outfits and come out to the Art Deco Preservation Ball. I’ll be there too!
