An Important Conversation about Israel & Palestine
Did you know that the day after Israeli Independence Day is a day Palestinians call Nakba Day? It translates to “Day of Catastrophe” and is an annual commemoration of the displacement of Palestinians that happened due to the creation of Israel.
Yeah, that’s how complicated the region is, and that is exactly why we need to have more conversations about Israel and Palestine.
Coming up this Thursday is a really interesting event that I’ll be taking part in called An Alternative Israeli Independence Day Event. Seven people (including myself) will tell their stories around Israel, Palestine, the occupation, feminism, gender, race, freedom, spirituality, Judaism, and so much more. It’s a great opportunity to be challenged, to learn something new, to take action, and to meet new partners and allies.
I’ll be speaking about my background of growing up an American Jew and how I became highly critical of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinian people. One of my conditions to speak was that there would also be Palestinians there to talk about their side of the story as well.
The organization putting it on is the New Israel Fund, an incredibly progressive organization who focuses on fighting for social justice and equality in Israel. And the form the talks are taking is really cool as well. It’s called Pecha Kucha, and each speaker gets to tell their story by showing 20 slides and talking for 20 seconds about each one.
Plus there will be food and drinks and afterwards there will be dancing!

I hope to see you there!
