Cult-Hit Standup Comedy Show Cheaper Than Therapy Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

The hit live stand-up comedy show Cheaper Than Therapy has been routinely selling out Union Square’s Shelton Theater for years, delivering rapid-fire LOLs like every 20 seconds and racking up 275 Yelp reviews with a five-star average. The show celebrates its fifth anniversary this weekend, marking five years of cheap-date hilarity, awesome craft cocktails, and raucous karaoke-fueled after-parties following many of the shows.

To celebrate the occasion, Cheaper Than Therapy is adding 8 p.m. shows on Friday and Saturday nights every weekend starting Oct, 5, complementing their current 10 p.m. shows those nights. (There are also 10 p.m. shows on Thursday and 7 p,. Shows on Sundays). Buying tickets in advance is highly recommended, as most shows do sell out, but there’s not a bad seat in the Shelton Theater house.

Every 70-90-minute Cheaper Than Therapy show welcomes a diverse line-up of local and well-known comics who regularly hang out and mingle (do shots) with guests after the show. Expect appearances from your co-producers, physicist-turned-comedian Jon Allen, Comedy Day and SF Sketchfest regular Eloisa Bravo, and Best Comedy Podcast Award-winner for the show You Look Nice Today, Scott Simpson.

The line-up varies with each show, and plenty of big-name, nationally known comedians have popped in to perform on the Cheaper Than Therapy stage. The show has welcomed Saturday Night Live head writer Michael Che, Laurie Kilmartin (Conan, Netflix), The Lucas Brothers (Arrested Development, Netflix), Emma Willmann (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Netflix), Tom Rhodes (Comedy Central, Netflix), Alex Edelman (@midnight, Netflix, BBC) among others.

Cheaper Than Therapy is a low-cost, high-hilarity live show, with none of the pesky drink minimums you see at so many other comedy clubs. Make an appointment with Cheaper Than Therapy, and let the trained comedy specialists do some work on your funny bone. Thanks a lot, you’ve been a great crowd!

Cheaper Than Therapy,  Thursdays (10 p.m.), Fridays (8 and 10 p.m.), Saturdays (8 and 10 p.m.), and Sundays (7 p.m.), Shelton Theater, 533 Sutter St, San Francisco, CA 94102, $20, tickets here
