This weekend is dubbed San Francisco Free Museum Weekend. On December 3rd and 4th you’ll be able to visit 21 featured museums and organizations at no cost to you.

The weekend of art was sponsored by anonymous donors who wanted to bring vibrancy back into the SF art scene at no loss to the spaces that are participating.

This event comes off the heels of The New York Times stating that the SF art scene is dying and lives in the shadow of LA’s art scene. Since, artists, gallery owners and museums within San Francisco have commented that they don’t agree; pushing back on the New York Times’ assessment.

“If I had a nickel for every time people said the cultural scene in San Francisco was dead for the past 25 years, I’d be a very rich man,” said Chad Coerver, executive director of the Contemporary Jewish Museum in a Datebook story.

This weekend’s nearly sold out free gallery weekend is one testament to how much we all love art within The Bay Area. But other events, such as Illuminate SF, BART Basel and even new galleries popping up in small theaters point to a thriving, playful, inventive and unique art scene.
