This Week’s Events

The Moth SF StorySLAM: ENVY 2023
7/25 | Public Works | 161 Erie St, SF | 7:30 pm | $17.50

The Moth StorySLAM is an open-mic storytelling competition in which anyone can share a true, personal, 5-minute story on the night’s theme. Sign up for a chance to tell a story or sit back and enjoy the show! Tonight’s theme is…ENVY: Prepare a five-minute story of that covetous feeling that turns us green. One of the seven sins, and every bit as ugly as jealousy. Bring your guilty tales of that neighbor with more mojo, the friend with more muscle, or the rent-controlled apartment. Or, flex your own fabulousness and good fortune, but watch your back!

Mirror Mirror (1990)
7/25 | Alamo Drafthouse Cinema | 2550 Mission St, SF | 9:30 pm | $10

Before THE CRAFT, there was MIRROR MIRROR. Co-written by sisters Annette and Gina Cascone and directed by Marina Sargenti, the film follows high school goth Megan (Rainbow Harvest, a dead ringer for Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz character in BEETLEJUICE) as she deals with typical teenage stuff: crushes, bullies, and a haunted mirror that grants her supernatural powers. MIRROR MIRROR combines YA vibes straight out of a Christopher Pike novel with plenty of R-rated thrills. But the film’s most notable – and enjoyable – aspect is its nuanced portrayal of relationships between women, which was rare for the horror genre in 1990.

d4vd emerged as a visionary artist only one year after he began writing and recording heart-piercing tracks alone in his sister’s closet in Houston, Texas. d4vd gained his now-eclectic taste in rap and indie music from internet wormholes and fan-made Fortnite videos on YouTube, which he also started creating as a homeschooled teenager.

Punch Needle 101
7/31 | Workshop | 1798 McAllister St, SF | 7 pm | $84

Punch needle is a fiber craft dating back to the 1880’s, but is experiencing a big resurgence in popularity with more modern motifs and applications. Existing somewhere between rug hooking and embroidery, punch needle involves punching a needle through fabric in a repetitive motion to create amazing designs with loops of yarn. It’s a fun and relaxing craft that can be turned into wall art, cushions, pillows, rugs, patches, purses… just about anything made with a textile! And with a great set of tools, even first timers will walk away with the confidence to continue and experiment on their own!

I Saw the Devil

I Saw the Devil is a game of cat and mouse, between a sociopathic killer, Kyung-chul (played by the menacing master of revenge, Choi Min-sik), and secret agent Soo-hyun (played by the smoldering Lee Byung-hun). When serial murderer Kyung-chul guts a retired police chief’s daughter, her fiance Soo-hyun decides to take matters into his own hands and makes the predator his prey, hunting down Kyung-chul in a deeply sinister vengeance plot that keeps escalating further and further, until Soo-hyun’s humanity is called into question.

I Saw the Devil is a magnificent, soul-crushing revenge film that flips the cards, making the righteous the monstrous, and it’s possibly Kim Jee-woon’s most refined film to date.

Temple Of Angels
7/31 | Rickshaw Stop | 155 Fell St, SF | 7 pm | $15

Temple of Angels’ debut full-length, Endless Pursuit, is a towering and stunning album of gothic beauty that heralds the proper arrival of one of the most dazzling bands performing right now. Shaped by the ghosts of the past and the wonder of the present, the release is dream pop at its most striking, using the haze and beauty of the genre not to blur songs til they are impenetrable in every sense, but rather to capture the fleeting wonder of new love and emphasize the confusion and disorientation of loss.
