Medium(s): As a painter, muralist, fashion and set designer, performance artist and arts educator, my entire life is art!

Interview with Artist Rachel Znerold:

BAS: You started your art career by…

Rachel Znerold: I was bartending through college in Boulder, while building up my art portfolio. My job allowed me to befriend older people who could actually afford my artwork, so when I decided to sell all my paintings and move to San Francisco by myself, I miraculously made enough money to live for a year in SF without getting another job. Fifteen years later, I’m still here in the Mission, so grateful to be making a living as a full-time artist, only now I’m raising my own little six-year-old artist too…. It’s a hustle, but I love it.

I’m a sophisticated graduate with a BFA or FUCK art school!

Haha- in this city, I’m definitely more of a peoples’ artist than a sophisticate, but I did get a dual undergraduate degree in Fine Art and Advertising/Graphic Design, knowing that I would need to be able to promote myself if I was going to be a self-employed artist.

Your art recently explores…

I hope my art encourages people to think more deeply about their connection to Mother Nature and to one another, inspiring greater conservation and care. My newest ‘Winter’ series captures magical snowy scenes lit by a blazing sun, reminding us of the importance of protecting our winters from the harmful effects of climate change. And while I like getting people to talk about the tough stuff, I also have a new brightly colored abstract series called ‘Joyful Noise’ that is just that… a happy breath of light and love in a chaotic world.

Any artists you think people NEED to see at Open Studios 2023?

Please come see ME on weekend one, and I weekend two, I will definitely be checking out the Youth Open Studios Art Show at The Drawing Room, because I am very inspired by this next generation of powerful artist/ change makers. On weekend three, I’ll see you at Arc Studios to visit many of my favorite artists but especially Joshua Coffy, and on weekend four, you MUST go say hi to the legendary Paul Madonna!

What can people expect when they come visit your studio?

An immersive explosion of color and happiness for the whole family! I’ll have Halloween kids’ art activities set up each day, as well as lots of new paintings, $20 SF art prints, hand-painted revamped vintage clothing, and it’s only a block to Dolores Park, so you can enjoy some sunshine after your art visit.

Favorite place to see art in the Bay Area

I’m a big fan public art, so I always love taking people to see all the amazing murals throughout the Mission District in Clarion and Balmy Alleys, and biking around to see all the new art popping up thanks to Illuminate the Arts and Paint the City.

What’s coming up next for you?

My Open StudiosArt Show is Sat/Sun October 28/29 from 10am to 5pm and then I’m looking forward to the Secession SF Holiday Pop-up Art Show December 14-17th at 307 Cortland in Bernal Heights!

SF Open Studios is FREE to attend!
