Glamorous Euphoria in Spite of it All – The Top 100 Songs of 2023

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

BY SAYRE PIOTROWSKI AND NICO SIMONIAN

Our Official 2023 Playlist, “Glamorous Euphoria in Spite of it All” is HERE!

It is that time of year again! 2023 is the fifth year running that BAS has convened a group of the most passionate music nerds in our midst to compile a list of the year’s essential tunes for our readers.  This year’s cohort was our largest yet, with 18 contributors ranging in age from their teens to their forties and spanning the musical spectrum in terms of taste and practice. We had input from several working musicians, DJs, critics, musical educators, and students. The title of the playlist is taken from a lyric by San Francisco native, Avalon Emerson’s “Astrology Poisoning,” a song you will find included on the list.

Every year our process begins with each panelist submitting a list of songs for the group to consider. Just as we have in past years, we are also sharing a much larger playlist that includes every song submitted. This year’s big list, called “Sing it Like Gospel,” includes nearly 1,100 selections and can be heard here.

Past playlists:

2010-2019 – “A Good Time, Not A Long Time” Songs Of The Decade.

2020 – “Only Leading Me To That”

2021 – “I Might Buy A Boat”

2022 – “New Salvation”

We write for busboys, poets, social workers, students, artists, musicians, magicians, mathematicians, maniacs, yodelers and everyone else out there who wants to enjoy life not as a rich person, but as a real person. Namely, we write for you.

We’re currently looking to expand our author pool. If you’re snarky, know what’s happening in your town, and good at making your fingers type out funny words, then you might be just the person we’re looking for. Email alex@brokeassstuart.com with some writing samples if you're interested. Cheers
