BroadwaySF’s 2024 Season Opens with Tony Award-Winning The Wiz

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Amidst jubilant crowds cheering, laughing, and sporting ear-to-ear smiles, The Wiz kicked off BroadwaySF’s 2024 season last night. BroadwaySF, responsible for programming at the Orpheum, Curran Theatre and Golden Gate Theatre, has a lineup of several incredible shows scheduled for the year. From on-stage Q&A sessions with beloved celebrities like RuPaul to historically significant Broadway musicals like The Wiz, the array of amazing shows has me planning well in advance to ensure I don’t miss any of the excitement.

The Wiz
The opening night of The Wiz – January 18th

I was so excited to see the Tony award-winning musical, The Wiz Thursday night with my good pal Dani. This is the first revival of this musical and it’s particularly awesome because The Wiz came to SF before it headed to Broadway in New York April 17th. What that meant was that the original broadway cast is featured during their short run at Golden Gate Theatre. It was such a treat that crowds cheered, laughed and were extra excited to enjoy the musical last night, January 18th. Mayor Breed opened the show by declaring January 18th “The Wiz” day.

This production of The Wiz marks the first revival in 45 years. The original musical has been called “culturally, historically, or artistically significant.” with 7 Tony awards in categories such as Tony award in Best Musical and Best Original Score. For many in the Black community, The Wiz was a groundbreaking moment for a generation – marking the first time Broadway musical characters spoke, sang, and moved in a way that resonated with their own experiences. Although The Wiz is nearly completely sold out in SF, the 2024 lineup of fantastic shows scheduled for 2024 in SF is truly thrilling and, as a girlie who loves broadway, I’m most excited to see…

1: John Cusack is coming to SF! They have a screening of High Fidelity with a live Q&A session happening in April that I’ll be at as well as a screening of Being John Malkovich.
2. In July, Mrs Doubtfire is coming to SF and you know it will be hilarious. Plus, we love anything that has anything to do with any Robin Williams reference.
3: Wicked is coming back in August! I saw this when it came to SF years and years ago and it’s not to be missed if you’re a fan of musicals.
4: Bone Thugs-n-Harmony is coming to SF’s Curran Theatre on March 1st and tickets are being sold by BroadwaySF
5: Finally, I’m super excited to see and experience the magic of Girl From North Country, a Tony Award-winning performance that breathes new life into 20 legendary songs by Bob Dylan.
