Birthday Month
by Vanessa Gil, Arts & Events Editor
Happy Birthday month to my fellow September babies! There’s so many good shows and events to celebrate our birthdays all month long… including not one, but TWO Pride celebrations (Oakland on the 8th, Martinez on the 21st)! My friend has a Open Mic this Saturday in Berkeley. And, of course, I NEED to see Childish Gambino on his final tour. Here’s how I’m else excited to celebrate for the week of 9/3 and beyond.

Future Islands
9/17 | Fox Theater | 1807 Telegraph Ave, Oakland | 7 p.m. Doors | $66-$210
From their start, Future Islands have been singular and instantly identifiable. Samuel T. Herring’s life-worn croons and cries backlit by Gerrit Welmers’ melodies and charged by the rhythms of William Cashion and Michael Lowry. That premise hasn’t changed on People Who Aren’t There Anymore, but the people have. There’s a pain and a joy that’s in Herring’s voice that’s only been rivaled by their legendary live performances, but never captured in their studio albums, that feels like it’s been untethered for the first time.

9/19 | Greek Theatre | 2001 Gayley Rd, Berkley | 5:30 p.m. Doors | $79.25, All agesFew 21st century artists have had the cultural impact of Jack Antonoff. Through his work as a producer for artists like Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, The 1975 and Lorde, he’s won eight Grammys to date. For years critics have wondered how his work is so successful and what defines it when it doesn’t quite sound like anything else (Antonoff ignores what’s on trend, even when that’s his last project). His methodology, he reveals, is the same for his production work as it is for writing his music with Bleachers: The great journey and struggle of creating your sound is to drill further and further into it, while the whole time shocking yourself and the people around you. The results are always intimate, confessional and unwaveringly tasteful.
