Today Is Forecasted To Be The Hottest Day Of The Year

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Much like a Nelly song, it’s about to get “Hot In Herre” Downtown San Francisco might hit 100 degrees on Tuesday.

Roger Gass, a meteorologist with the NWS Bay Area, hinted that there’s a good chance we could see temps at 90 or even higher. A heat wave is rolling in, thanks to a high-pressure system over the Pacific that’s pushing unusually warm weather our way. This heat is expected to hit hard from Monday through Wednesday, and there’s a heat advisory in effect for the whole region from 11 a.m. Monday to 11 p.m. Wednesday. We could see inland areas soaring into the 100s, while coastal spots might hit around 95. Tuesday looks to be the hottest day, with Oakland around 94 degrees, San Jose hitting 102, Santa Rosa at 104, and Walnut Creek reaching a sizzling 106.

The weather service advises keeping outdoor activities to a minimum during the hottest parts of the day and to never leave kids or pets in cars.

Dalton Behringer, another forecaster, noted that the southern Santa Clara Valley and inland East Bay will feel the most intense heat, with highs between 104 and 108. Interestingly, while summer is usually the hottest time inland, coastal areas often see their peak temps in September or October. This is due to offshore winds that push hot air toward the coast, reducing that lovely fog we rely on in the summer.

A fun tidbit from this week’s forecast: the temperature measured at 5,000 feet at Oakland Airport is expected to surpass 77 degrees for the first time since 1980! The last time that happened, San Francisco broke 90 degrees three days in a row, peaking at 97 on October 1.

So, as of now, the forecast is calling for highs of 83 on Monday, 90 on Tuesday, and 85 on Wednesday in downtown SF. Behringer mentioned that a lot of things can affect how hot it gets, especially those offshore winds. They’ll start the day blowing easterly but are expected to switch to onshore later, bringing in some cool air. He added that even light offshore winds can really impact San Francisco’s temperatures.

Jan Null from Golden Gate Weather Services is being a bit cautious, saying he’s not betting on downtown SF hitting 90 degrees for three days straight. The high-pressure system isn’t super strong, so we’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Just don’t wear your North Face or Patagonia today. Also don’t pretend you don’t have at least one. I know who you people are.
