SF Protesters Call for AI Regulation to Prevent “Extinction of Humanity”

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

As the years go by, the world looks more and more like a science fiction dystopia than what we all know, or at least used to know as real life. We have all the ingredients to create whatever kind of society we want, and it seems that the well-financed elite just want to create hell on earth. Artificial intelligence is a threat to almost anyone who needs to work in order to keep a roof over their heads. As AI gets more and more sophisticated, the Trump Administration has slipped a provision into its “Big, Beautiful Bill” that takes away the ability for states to regulate AI for the next ten years.

AI’s sophistication and potential danger was recently examined in a new study by Anthropic that illustrated AI’s ability to self preserve, even resorting to blackmail to achieve its desired results. We’re basically in the Cyberpunk, cult-classic movie The Lawnmower Man, but Silicon Valley is too stupid to realize it. Or too greedy, probably too greedy.

In an attempt to combat the looming threat of AI, a group, simply known as Stop AI, protested in front of OpenAI’s new headquarters in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood.

However, the protest is likely to fall on deaf ears both locally and nationally. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO and Silicon Valley’s new wonder boy has not only been extremely close to the Trump administration, but also has the ear of Mayor Daniel Lurie and even worked on the Mayor’s transition team.

“We wanted to make a statement, we want to get the word out to the public about this new technology, which is very dangerous,” said Bill Lo, a member of Stop AI in an interview with ABC News. “It poses an existential threat to humanity itself.”

The rise of AI couldn’t come at a worse time for San Francisco or the country in general. As inequality reaches all time highs, and Americans find their labor devalued by automation, their dollars devalued by inflation, and their buying power reduced as the Trump Administration issues tariffs in an escalating trade with China and seemingly the rest of the world. To put it frankly, the workers, whether upper middle class, middle class or working class could use a fucking break, and the proprietors of AI seem more interested in breaking us than anything else.

Which is exactly why we need regulations in place to limit the spread of AI. The term ‘late stage capitalism’ is thrown around a lot sarcastically to demean the worst abuses and absurdities inherently present in capitalism, but as AI gets smarter than humans and achieves AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) we might be entering something much darker: Late stage civilization.

I’m lazy as fuck. I understand the appeal of automation to a degree. But leveraging this tool to essentially make our labor worthless might just automate our asses out of existence.

Don’t say you weren’t warned. Not only by the protesters that being ignored, but by every fucking science fiction writer that ever existed. Phillip K Dick is rolling in his grave. Did you fuckers even watch Blade Runner? Fuck…
