Grace Jones. Grace f****** Jones. That should be enough, but just in case you need more . . . Grace Jones as singer, actress, author, traveller, artist and revolutionist has been a shape-shifting trouble-making meta-presence in the entertainment universe since her emergence as a model in New York City and Paris in the early 1970s. Relishing the dangerous possibilities of late 1970s New York, her highly provocative often riotous shows in downtown lofts and nightclubs saw her crowned as Disco Queen with attitude and celebrated as an ultimate Gay Icon. Grace became one of the most audacious and unforgettable characters.

Winona Fighter
6/19 | Popscene @ Brick & Mortar Music Hall | 1710 Mission St, SF | 7 p.m. Doors | $27.53
Based in Nashville, Winona Fighter—frontwoman and multi-instrumentalist Coco Kinnon, lead guitarist Dan Fuson and bassist/producer Austin Luther—formed after Coco moved there from Boston, and made a strong impression with their 2022 debut EP, Father Figure. Three of its songs: “Subaru”, “You Look Like A Drunk Phoebe Bridgers”, and “Wlbrn St Tvrn”, were re-recorded for MY APOLOGIES TO THE CHEF, the band’s debut album, but their power and potency is in no way diminished. In fact, the rage and frustration that courses through them, and which also infuses the band’s energetic and compelling live shows, feels even more visceral, pointed and necessary than before, something that carries over into the other songs too. MY APOLOGIES TO THE CHEF is a wonderfully raw and cohesive reflection on life today that bottles the spirited and cathartic energy of the band’s live shows, as well as the angst and anxiety of being alive.

aja monet

aja monet is a Grammy-nominated Surrealist Blues Poet. Her poems are a work of gravity. They are a fundamental for which all things are attracted, considered upon and enacted towards. Her work moves, constantly, between origin and outcome, allowing them to exist in converse. On her debut album, when the poems do what they do, which was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Spoken Word Poetry Album, we glimpse her indefatigable commitment to speak. Those thematic origins of this album at times center around Black resistance, love and the inexhaustible quest for joy. The songs throughout are insistent and unrelenting, with some reminiscent of jazz club virtuosity and melee while others act as a healing balm in gilead, moving like that of the call to intercessory prayer. aja will be performing with her live band.

Karate
6/23 | Great American Music Hall | 859 O’Farrell St, SF | 8 p.m. | $30-$35
Formed in Boston in 1993 by Geoff Farina, Eamonn Vitt and Gavin McCarthy, Karate added Jeff Goddard on bass in 1995. From punk roots, the band ventured widely, veering into jazz-rock, post-rock and a unique version of slowcore in its progressive indie experimentation. The band re-emerges in Fall 2024 with “Make It Fit”, the band’s first album in 20 years. It doesn’t try to recapture a youthful, DIY-era magic. Instead, it picks up where Karate’s three musicians are today: with a deeper skillset, adult angst cut through with moments of joy, punctuated with searing instrumental performances. Make It Fit is the opposite of a cynical cash-in. It’s daring, requiring a full commitment from band and audience.
Donovan Woods
6/23 | The Chapel | 777 Valencia St, SF | 8 p.m. | $26-$29
Throughout his distinguished career, Donovan Woods has built a devoted following who cling to the acclaimed songwriter’s every word. Never one to mince words, Woods is one of music’s most vulnerable storytellers and on his newest studio album, Donovan takes that a step further. Honest and unflinching, on “Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now”, his seventh studio album, Woods takes a long look inside and isn’t necessarily thrilled with what he sees. For an artist who isn’t afraid to bare his soul, this is as emotionally gritty as he has ever been.
