A Bit of Blood and Bargains at New May Wah

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Okay, sake-check and.. what! Kids, don't touch the durian......oh, for crying out loud!

Trader Joe’s bags you at the snacks.  Safeway is but a necessary evil – gouging you at every turn. The store on the corner’s often a misguided venture, usually heavily influenced by extreme hunger or heavy influence.  Where does one turn?  Well if one lives in the nosebleeds of the Western Addition or the wind-swept stretches of the Richmond, desperation is not in thy midst.

Perilous tales of menacing octogenarians wielding pink polyethylene sacks of doom thankfully keep the unfortunate masses away from Clement Street, and more importantly, the westside’s most prized treasure – The New May Wah Market.

Though Trader Joe’s may pride itself on 'œcultural variety' and other chains on their daily specials, they’re dealing in Tiddlywinks in the supermarket game when it comes to the steals to behold at New May Wah. Whether you feel like a mundane sup of pre-packaged soba and some cheap greens or rather choose to fricassee some frogs legs after picking out your live dispatch itself – its aisles runneth over with selection for a song.

Should things seem a tad too visceral, however, just remember-Saran-Wrap and pretending not to know where your food heralds from comes at that all-too-smarting price.

And in case you are looking for that show-stopping birthday present or just care to wrap your mind around digits that shall never have relevance in your life, do peruse their canned abalone or cognac and scotch selection nestled safely behind check-out.  One-stop shopping, please!

Stephen Torres - Threadbare-Fact Finder (Editor, San Francisco)

Stephen's early years were spent in a boxcar overlooking downtown Los Angeles. From there he moved around the state with his family before settling under the warm blanket of smog that covers suburban Southern California. Moving around led to his inability to stay in one place for very long, but San Francisco has been reeling him back in with its siren song since 1999.
By trade he pours booze, but likes to think he can write and does so occasionally for the SF Bay Guardian, Bold Italic and 7x7. He also likes to enjoy time spent in old eateries, bars and businesses that, by most standards, would have been condemned a long time ago.
