Lots to thank The King for...including FREE museum admissions!
It goes without saying that we have many things to thank Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for, including, for most of us, a day off work on Monday. To commemorate the birth of The King and his influence as a leading activist of the Civil Rights Movement, the city has some special FREE events happening in and around the Yerba Buena Center.
I’m gonna give it to you straight and say that out of all the events planned, FREE admission to the Contemporary Jewish Museum is the coolest. Personally, I think the Jewseum is one of SF’s most underrated attractions and definitely deserves a visit considering the awesome exhibitions going on, including “Curious George Saves the Day: The Art of Margret and H.A. Rey,” the at once moving, hilarious and crowd-pleasing StoryCorps booth (wear waterproof mascara for this. Trust me), and “Black Sabbath: The Secret Musical History of Black-Jewish Relations.” All this excitement almost makes me want to convert! Well, that and the latkes.
The Museum of the African Diaspora is also offering FREE admission and corresponding events on Monday, like a chalk drawing mural, book reading, and live music. Also, the Yerba Buena Center itself has a lineup of FREE goings-on, which you can check out here. You probably have at least part of the day off; might as well spend it with some history, culture, and subsequent binge drinking in honor of the good Dr. King, Jr.
