Popuphood Pops Up in Old Oakland

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

I love this idea. Two business owners in the great but not-well-frequented neighborhood in old Oakland arranged for retailers to temporarily set up retail space in unoccupied retail storefronts. The results? Popuphood, a chance for more development and foot traffic for Old Oakland and support for small, local business owners who don’t have to make a big commitment to a retail space when first starting out.

Retailers include a custom-made bicycle shop, vintage jewelery, an art gallery, and a furniture store housed in a shipping container. I’m not guaranteeing that these stores are cheap, but it does add more incentive to check out Old Oakland, which not only has great architecture, a great vibe and great places to check out like Endgame and The Trappist.

Robin Hardwick - Cost-Conscious Connoisseur

Robin was raised in the shopping malls of suburban Long Island, New York. As a teenager, her life goals were to become a writer and marry Bret Michaels. After attending college at the University of Delaware (yes, in the state of Delaware) and earning a graduate degree educationl at NYU, she's achieved only one of those goals. Along with writing, Robin enjoys performing improv comedy, internet memes, cross-stitch, and showing off her alarmingly extensive knowledge of obscure pop culture trivia. Currently, Robin resides in Oakland, CA and is writing a book about the 1980s teen book series, Sweet Valley High.
