FREE Writing Groups!
Us writers spend a lot of time hunched over keyboards drinking booze coffee to fuel the fire. I tend to live in my head and spend a lot of time hanging out with my characters. But I suppose it’s good to spend some time with real people, too…
When I do make it out of the Mission, there are two SF meet-ups for writers I’ve been going to that I love. And the best part? They’re FREE.
I’ve found people who have the same questions as me, and others who can answer my questions. I started a podcast with someone I met, I now work with someone else, and I got a great book recommendation that changed the course of my novel.
Self-Publishers: For people who are self-publishing and want to learn more about the process, you can’t beat SF Bay Area Self Published Authors Meetup Group, founded by Alan Petersen. As he writes, “If you’re an author who is self published or is getting ready/interested in self publishing than join us to talk shop; however, the purpose of this club is to share ideas/strategies on self publishing and marketing our books… All levels of experience are welcomed (already self published, full-time author, rookie self publisher).”
Authors: If you’re more into the art and craft of writing, you’ll want to check out Fog City Writers, founded by Camille Cusumano. As she writes, “We are writers seriously dedicated to the process and content of our writing. I’ve been a professional writer/editor more than 30 years and I recall the “tough road to hoe” just getting started.” Her meet-up about “the line between fiction and non-fiction” was great, and the upcoming meet-up is about “The Narrative Arc.”
Know of some others that are good for writers? Tell me about them in the comments.
Ok, now we can all go back to typing 🙂
