BA of the Week – Artist Luis Monteagudo
Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude. Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit…probably not.
Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week? Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.
Luis is an artist living and working in New York City. He’s opinionated and has shit to say and this is what he has to say about himself:
I’m part gypsy, not much of a sleeper, prefer doing over talking, I like it when people say hi to me on the street or in random places.
I keep a visual blog of my art process. Kind of like a Flickr page only more obnoxious because I take up an actual blog page. The best part is there’s nothing to read, that whole paying attention and thinking thing can be an issue. This is that page.
Read below for some insight into his life as a broke-ass.
Name: Luis Monteagudo
Age: Do you mean like at the time of my death or as in right now? Historically speaking, the Age of Enlightenment and 1st Century AD are my faves.
Occupation: Artist. Everything I do relates to a form of art.
What neighborhood do you live in?: Bushwick, Brooklyn
Best money saving tip: Rich people get shit for free all the time. Find a rich person that has no genuine credibility or creativity but yet has a lot of social connections. Let them get a glimpse of how young, broke and beautiful you are and they’ll always make sure you get your shit for free too. Greed, lust and desire are a Mofo.
What do you refuse to spend money on?: Hotels where the staff has more ego than the clients they service. I completely expect a subservient hotel staff. Well that, chewing gum, fancy clothes and drinks for people I don’t know.
Most expensive thing you’ve ever bought: I really shouldn’t admit to buying two pounds of weed on here so I’ll go with 30 yards of linen to paint on.
How’d that feel?: The linen was smooth to the touch and it almost hurt to paint on it cause it felt so good and cost so damn much.
Favorite cheap eat: The Dominican place around the corner from my apt for chicken. $3.50. What? Exactly. But please don’t just move here for the cheap Dominican chicken. You will ruin it for the rest of us.
Favorite dive bar: There’s three ( I may drink excessively ), The Wreck Room in Bushwick, some place in Southside Williamsburg with no sign and the Library in the East Village.
Best deal you’ve ever gotten: A lot of free fancy clothes and I trade some of my smaller works on paper for things like cameras, computers, alcohol and more all the time. Creativity is a very valuable commodity.
Favorite free thing to do: Getting into fashion, music and art events ranging high to low. When the event isn’t free get on the list. If you can’t get on the list, get the door guy stoned at the beginning of their shift. Just go early, smoke them out and come back later. Works almost every time except for a few places in Manhattan.
Are you a hipster?: Not sure, but I ate one for dinner last night. Does that count?
