FREE Book Labyrinth, Cheap Poetry
What’s that? You want to walk through a maze made out of books, then get some poetry for $1? No problem. The International Poetry Library is making that happen for you this weekend at San Francisco’s Fort Mason Pavilion.
To be clear, this picture is not of the actual Fort Mason book maze, nor so I have any idea what the Fort Mason book maze will look like. Which I think makes it a little more fun. A maze of books is one of those conceptual things I wish I saw more of. Like the Brautigan Library that only puts unpublished manuscripts on its shelves. But he’s also the guy who once wrote a story about a man trying to replace his plumbing with poetry. That didn’t work. “It’s what they call seeing the light.”
There will be thousands of books of poetry on sale, along with every other kind of book. On Sunday, April 7 they will all be $1. If you can’t wait that long, everything is on sale there from today through Saturday for $3 or less, on a 3-2-1 scale: $3-hard cover books; $2-paperback books; $1-DVDs, CDs, books on tape, vinyl and other forms of media.
On Sunday there will also be a poetry workshop by Brendan Constantine, teacher of many workshops at Venice Beach’s Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center. He will be leading a new poem workshop from 10:00-Noon at the Reader’s Bookstore next to the book sale. Cost is $30. Constantine has some wonderful poems, including this one about teaching a poem for 26 hours straight.
