Brazen Head – Where Everybody Might Actually Know Your Name
The Brazen Head sits on the corner of two innocuous residential streets in the marina and has to be one of that neighborhood’s best kept secrets. It is both a restaurant and bar (hold your applause) but I have yet to eat there as the prices are not exactly broke-ass friendly, but judging by the down home décor and friendly service I have to imagine the food is well worth whatever it costs. So back to the important part the bar.
Upon entering The Brazen Head you really do get the feeling that this is San Francisco’s version of Cheer’s. The bar area is small and extremely intimate but don’t worry about sitting next to a stranger as I have never encountered a mean-spirited soul here. Once you take your seat you will be greeted by the real highlight of The Brazen Head, the bartender Michael. He’s been there each time I’ve visited and while I figure they have other bartenders if they are even half as cool as Michael you’re still in for a good time. Not only will Michael mix you a stiff drink but he gives off that vibe that he really enjoys working there and catching up with the people that patronize his bar. During my last visit he made a killer old fashion and advised me on the best bars to check out in Noe Valley, all while we commiserated over a troubling Giants game that happened to be on TV.
Mark down the address in your smart phone and make your way to the Brazen Head next time you find yourself looking for a quiet drink in the Marina.
