40 Bands in 4 Days, Balanced BreakFEST Proves There are Still Musicians Living in San Francisco

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

San Francisco can be a lonely city for musicians and others focusing on creative endeavors. We had 1 summer of love, but since then it’s been a challenging city to stay in and not get pushed out. The average person lives here for 2 years before moving on. In 2013 Balanced Breakfast started as a way to help provide community for music industry professionals and a reason to stay in San Francisco. We didn’t know when we started that eating pancakes and talking about music would become so important to the local scene. What started with 2 social media friends soon become a network of professionals in 28 domestic cities and 2 international locations meeting in-person to solve complex issues in the industry. Locally we have meetings in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Napa, Santa Cruz, Sacramento, Santa Rosa. We’ve also grown to Los Angeles, Nashville, Denver, Austin, Portland, and more. What started as sharing a meal together quickly became a way to feel connected in San Francisco, which can be hard to accomplish. Attendees talk about actions that we can employe to help the Bay Area music scene become a place where musicians & industry professionals can make money doing what we love. (Music)

After five years of aiding musicians on a weekly basis over breakfast, the BB team realized that it was time to take BB to the next level. We still think sober morning meetings are key to the health of the local music community. However, we also need live music and booze. There is a major hunger in the music industry for the opportunity to connect with other professionals in real life. Additionally, musicians are looking for opportunities to play for larger audiences. When we combine our efforts we’re able to draw more eyes to our projects. After years of talking about live shows,  we created Balanced BreakFEST, the second annual SF music festival in the Mission September 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd. It features a variety of local and touring bands and has become the ultimate example of community in the music industry. The festival is the best way for us to put into practice the things we talk about at breakfast. It’s also a great way for you to discover 40 bands in 4 days.

Join us to see live music by Ellisa Sun, Adam Brookes, Kingsley Music, Sam Johnson, California State Flower, Fellow Vessel, HATE DRUGSYour Fearless Leader, ScruffyPupGreat Highway, Life Size Models, The Go Ahead, Trace Repeat, Californicorns, The Urban Renewal Project, and Night Animals. Stay late for the after-party with a DJ Set by Reed Fox & Bun Bun from Denver, Colorado. If you’re looking for community in the music industry you’ve found your group. Come say hi we’d love to make new friends.

I am the co-founder of Balanced Breakfast, a meetup for music industry professionals. No, I do not sing or play any instruments ... but I have tried! My passion for music began at 7 when my parents bought me a drum set. I was BAD at drums. So I moved on, joined the school band, and played clarinet. I was BAD at the clarinet. Trying and failing at instruments continued through elementary school and into college. It turns out that while I could recognize good music; I lacked the skill to make it.

Now I'm broke, beautiful, and writing about music for Stuart...
