QUIZ BY SCOTT MANSFIELD

So you think you know how to recycle, compost, or trash in SF?

When was the last time you trash-talked someone for putting their pizza box in the recycle bin, only to then puzzle over where to drop the aluminum foil from your carne asada burrito?

One of our state’s long-term goals is to reduce the amount of waste that goes into incinerators or landfills by either recycling or composting it.  And while politicians have a large impact on this by enacting and enforcing regulations, we consumers need to know where to put our trash.

Verify your cred with the following quick quiz.

  • This quiz is for waste disposal items in San Francisco only; other communities have different disposition rules.
  • For items that require “special handling, ” or have a “take back” location see this link.
  • A few of the items have more than one correct answer, but you only need to pick one.
  • This quiz collects your answers (the score displays after you click the “Submit” button at the end). It does not collect any personal data.

* This quiz was updated 2/28/24. Recology SF provided two corrections pertaining to the plastic bag question and the toothpaste tube question.  Namely, our ‘correct’ answers were actually ‘incorrect’ on those two questions!  We are sorry that the original quiz had incorrect information, it turns out we have plenty to learn about recycling too!  All quiz answers are now accurate.
