Suspect Caught Allegedly Using Blowtorch To Cause Fires In Oakland

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

A suspect was apprehended for allegedly using a blowtorch to ignite multiple vegetation fires along Interstate 880 in Oakland on Monday, according to officials. These fires occurred between Fruitvale Avenue, High Street, and Oakport Street, causing a traffic advisory around 12:30 p.m., as announced by the Oakland Fire Department on social media. The Oakland Police Department confirmed to SFGATE that the suspect was detained after they received several reports about a person setting fires in the area.

Apparently, our wannabe fire-starter managed to ignite four fires on both the northbound and southbound lanes of the freeway. Michael Hunt, a spokesperson for the fire department, told SFGATE that all the fires were put out, and the crews have since packed up and left the scene. Hunt mentioned that the fire department is “confident” this person might be connected to other fires along the same stretch in the past few weeks. He said the earlier fires had a similar M.O.—like this guy has a signature style or something.

Meanwhile, these fires happened while the Creek Fire was raging in Alameda County’s Sunol Wilderness Regional Preserve. As of Monday afternoon, Cal Fire reported that the Creek Fire had grown to 744 acres and was 35% contained. They’re still trying to figure out how that one started.

So, picture this: firefighters are already neck-deep dealing with the Creek Fire, and then this fucking guy decides to add more chaos. Thanks, dude. The quick response from both the Oakland Fire Department was crucial in keeping the situation from getting out of hand. They managed to put out the fires..

Residents in the area were understandably on edge with all these fires popping up. The fire department’s claim that the suspect might be linked to other fires along the same freeway stretch was a bit reassuring—at least they got the guy, right? But the investigation is still ongoing, and officials are asking everyone to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.

While the Creek Fire continues to blaze on, the community is keeping an eye out. This whole ordeal just goes to show how important quick action and teamwork are when it comes to dealing with wildfires. And hey, maybe it’s a good reminder to leave the blowtorches for… why the fuck does this guy have a blowtorch?
