An Alameda Home With a History of Homicide Is Up For Rent

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Everyone says they want to live in a place that’s rich with history, but they never specify what type of history. Well, if you want to live in what could be the Bay Area equivalent to American Horror Story’s Murder House, here’s your chance.

A spacious three-bedroom, two-bath home in Alameda is currently available for rent, boasting 1,550 square feet of updated living space. Listed at $4,000 per month, the property includes hardwood floors throughout, an attached garage, in-unit laundry, and a fireplace in the combined living and dining room. There’s even a backyard, and it’s close to Alameda Beach, there only one catch…

A grim recent history haunts the property at 417 Kitty Hawk Road, and it’s not mentioned in the online listing. Just nine months ago, the house was the scene of a horrific tragedy. According to police reports, the former tenant, 54-year-old Shane Killian, allegedly murdered his entire family inside the home. Killian, a welding inspector, has pleaded not guilty to five counts of murder in Alameda County court. He stands accused of fatally shooting his wife, their two young sons, and his in-laws. He initially blamed the killings on his wife, but this claim contradicted both forensic evidence and the final words of his father-in-law, who identified Killian before succumbing to his injuries. Investigators later confirmed that Killian was the only person found with gunshot residue on his hands.

Under California law, landlords are legally required to disclose any deaths that occurred on a property within the past three years. When questioned about the home’s past, Dave Rafter of Gallagher and Lindsey Property Management told the SF Standard the company would comply with disclosure laws. “We follow the law,” he said. “But we don’t advertise it up front.”

It doesn’t appear that the strategy is working because now entire articles are being written exposing the mass murder that took place in the home. And you never know, you might find a gigantic piece of shit who wants to live in the house to do seances or some other weird shit. This is the Bay Area after all, and the Bay Area is a place is filled to the brim with kooky aunts, and somehow a lot of them are rich who may be into that shit.

It’s understandable that the company didn’t want to highlight this part of the property’s history, but it’s also incredibly dishonest for them not to.

Imagine you’re about to sign a lease and the property management company is like, “oh yeah, but the way, a man killed his entire family here, but look at that back yard! SIGN THE FUCKING PAPERWORK!”

It just feels kind of gross, you know?
