FREE Outdoors Funtimes – Point Bonita Lighthouse Hike
Ah Point Bonita. Mystical. Magical. No one knows the true translation, but some have said it is ancient Mayan for “Clive Owen’s Happy Place.” Not really, but I’m sure if Mr. Owen were to venture on the half-mile hike to the beautiful and historical Point Bonita Lighthouse in the Marin Headlands, he would have a jolly good time. My cute little old Ophthalmologist in Utah told me about this little gem when I was there last week, and if he thinks it’s fun then you know it must effing rule. Since his initial recommendation I have confirmed, with younger, ‘hipper’ sources that this hike is indeed awesome and will satiate your thirst for the great outdoors, breathtaking scenery, and bitchin’ old lighthouses. As described by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy:
Point Bonita is located at the extreme southwestern tip of the Marin Headlands. The steep, half-mile walk to Point Bonita Lighthouse takes you along a narrow ridge, through a hand-chiseled tunnel, and over a heart-stopping suspension footbridge to what seems like the end of the world. California’s coastline stretches north and south, the Pacific rolls away to the west, and San Francisco glitters inland.
Sweet right? That glittering is probably me and the fucking confetti from New Year’s Eve, that, no matter how hard I try, will NOT vacate my hair. Seriously this shit should be considered a form of torture.
Anywho, if you have a hankering to get out of the city for a bit and see some beautiful stuff for FREE, the Point Bonita Lighthouse hike is your ticket to happiness. The trail is only open for tours Saturdays, Sundays & Mondays 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. so plan accordingly. Happy hiking!
