Which SF Landlords Are Paying Big Bucks To Defeat The Prop. 10 Rent Control Measure

Is your rent money being used to undermine the California Nov. 6 Affordable Housing Act known as Prop. 10? There’s a good chance that it is! We went through all 1,728 checks written statewide from rent control opponents, and found that many San Francisco landlords are using their tenants’ rent money to fight against November’s Proposition 10 rent control measure.

The completely false bullshit TV commercial seen above has played during tons of local cable television advertising breaks this week, thanks to $60 million in funding from entrenched real estate interests. The ad claims to be paid for by “veterans, seniors, affordable housing providers, [and] social justice groups,” but we found precisely zero such advocacy organizations among their contributors.

Instead, we found that their contributors are trust funds, property investors, and landlords. The wealthy landowners and developers are against Prop 10 because it gives our own city governments the power to make changes to Costa Hawkins, which is the statewide law that prevents rent control on buildings built past 1979. Costa Hawkings is a big reason why SF has lost its artists, teachers, and middle class, it’s why we can’t have rent control on single family homes, which has forced so many SF families to move away, and a big reason why developers want to demolish our Victorians and replace them with new ‘luxury’ condos that cannot have rent control.

Here’s which San Francisco landlords are spending their tenants’ rent money to defeat rent control, and how much of it they’ve spent against Prop. 10:
