Broke-Ass of the Week – Sally Kuchar, Editor of Curbed SF
Every week we feature a different person from the community shedding a little light on their life of brokeitude. Who knows, maybe you’ll learn something about the human spirit — probably not.
Wanna be a Broke-Ass of the Week? Holler at us here and we’ll send you the questionnaire.
Sally Kuchar, the editor of Curbed SF, is this week’s featured broke-ass — and we’re all a little jealous of her. Not only does Sally get paid to blog about beautiful/eccentric/astronomically expensive San Francisco properties all day, but she also has the coolest DIY dining room EVER. On top of that, she’s into Ghostface Killah and the magic that is Two-Buck Chuck. Does she not sound like the best party guest ever?!
Name: Sally Kuchar
Age: 27
Occupation: Editor, Curbed SF
What neighborhood do you live in?: The Tenderloin
What are you listening to these days?: Ghostface Killah, Joy Division, Weezy and Vladimir Horowitz.
Best money saving tip: Use the “or best offer” option on Craigslist and eBay.
What do you refuse to spend money on?: Pillows, window treatments and bedding. I can easily make it myself for a fraction of the retail
price.
Most expensive thing you’ve ever bought: Laptop
How’d that feel?: Very necessary
Favorite cheap eat: I cannot even begin to calculate the amount of $2 bills I’ve spent on Chuck Shaw. It’s astonishing. But my heart belongs to Tu Lan. I’m also a big fan of Taqueria Cancun on Market & Sixth.
Favorite dive bar: Red’s Place in Chinatown. They’re good at keeping the riff raff out.
Best deal you’ve ever gotten: For nearly a month (and another time over Thanksgiving) I got to housesit the Margarido House in Upper Rockridge in Oakland. I don’t know how much people have to pay to rent it out for events, but I got to sleep, hang-out, host and cook in that house for free.
If you’re into roller derby, the Bay Area Derby Girls will let you see their bouts for free if you volunteer before, during or after the bout.
Favorite free thing to do: Fix up my apartment, DIY style. I recently spent 15 or so hours covering a wall with paint chips that I received for free awhile back. The end result is pretty neat. And then there’s roller skating along the Embarcadero, which is one of the most fun things to do EVER!
If you woke up a millionaire, what’s the first thing you’d buy?: All day long I browse through listings of top tier residential properties in San Francisco. I guess I’d buy a piece of land in the city with a nice house on it. There’s plenty.
Despite not having money, do you still love your life?: Money can come and it can go. Great friendships & family is what bring me true happiness. So yes, I love my life.
Do you own my book?: Yeah, but I spilled a can of Hamm’s on it awhile back so I think it’s ruined.
Best hangover cure: Fresh sheets and an Ambien.
Are you a hipster?: I don’t know much about local bands and I really love baseball, so probably not.
