Kokedama: Japanese Hanging Plant + Moss Ball Gardens

This magical trend of plants and string-bound moss balls is pretty hard not to crush on. These little (and not so little) moss ball bundles of joy are a ton of fun to design and construct. They will quickly become your new creative obsession as you experiment with getting different houseplants, succulents, and even herbs into the kokedama bonsai mix! Once you learn how to assemble your kokedama plant and moss ball, using string to bind it together, you will take a crack at constructing two kokedama moss ball projects (one small and one medium). You’ll receive instruction on proper plant care as well as recommendations on which “hard to kill” houseplants and succulents to use so that your kokedama creations are guaranteed a long and happy life!

Some say it’s an affliction; we call it “comedy…”

The Bay Area Pun-Off is a bi-monthly sold-out San Francisco comedy staple: holding together a diverse community of wordplayers and countless unfortunate bystanders (and sitters). Bolstered by groans, eye rolls, and the ever-sought-after double-handed facepalm, we enter our 7th year with equal parts ironic triumph and gleeful apology. At the Pun-Off, we are proud to invite you to celebrate the contagious power of the pun, the lowest form of comedy, the highest form of intellect; a prized tool of parents, kindergarten teachers, Facebook trolls, and Witzelsucht patients everywhere!

Oakland Pride helps create a safe space to come home to. A sanctuary where you are protected, can be all you are without judgment and are embraced by your chosen queer family that is strong in numbers and a fierce force fueled by the Power of Pride.

Yoi Toki SF – A FutureFunk / Vaporwave Party
9/9 | Rickshaw Stop | 155 Fell St, SF | 10 pm | $20

YOI TOKI Returns To San Francisco! Future Funk is a Vaporwave subgenre that emerged around 2010 (championed by artists such as Yung Bae, Night Tempo and Macross 82-99). It draws from 70s/80’s Funk, Disco, Disco House, Vaporwave and Japanese City Pop influences, resulting in a sound that is upbeat, insanely danceable, very disco and very funky. Future Funk’s aesthetic is a nostalgic mix 90s anime and ’80s consumer culture (the fact that it is somehow descended from Vaporwave goes some way in explaining the familiar and yet strangely unique sound and visuals).

Thievery Corporation w/ Kruder & Dorfmeister
9/9 | The Midway | 900 Marin St, SF | 3 pm | $40+

The Midway, Opulent Temple & Duckpond Present: PERMISSION TO LAND: MAGNETIC MOON

“Celebrate the two greatest science-fiction spectacles ever made on the Castro Theatre’s giant screen in one evening! James Cameron’s masterful blockbusters not only deliver jaw-dropping special effects by the legendary SFX artist Stan Winston, they showcase career-defining performances by both Linda Hamilton (Sarah Connor) and Sigourney Weaver (Ellen Ripley). Don’t miss these prophetic ruminations on the imminent dangers of terminators, xenomorphs and greedy corporations. Pristine 35mm prints courtesy of Disney, Rialto & a very special private 35mm collector.

U.S. Girls
9/9 | The Independent | 628 Divisadero St, SF | 9 pm | $25

If the alluring moniker used by Megan Remy conjures images of volleyball teams or cheerleading squads, forget it. Not that there’s any doubt that Remy–sorry, U.S. Girls–couldn’t rise and conquer either challenge. Like fellow DIY ingenues Sally Strobelight and Inca Ore, U.S. Girls’ approach is deceptively ethereal and delightfully haunting; lithe, lysergic gamma rays of keyboard murk beamed over percussive bonk sort of resemble Diamanda Galas reinterpreting Suicide’s Red Star. And dig that cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Prove It All Night,” done in such an effortless, barbital lush you’d swear the air was filled with mescaline.

Sunday, 9/10

Keke Palmer
9/10 | The New Parish | 1743 San Pablo Ave, Oakland | 8 pm | $30

Keke Palmer is an Emmy award-winning actress, singer, songwriter, producer and television host. She recently starred in Jordan Peele’s Universal summer blockbuster Nope opposite Daniel Kaluuya, earning unanimously rave reviews from critics and audiences alike as well as a NY Film Critics’ Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Vintage Trouble
9/10 | The Independent | 628 Divisadero St, SF | 8 pm | $25-30

Steeped in the sounds of classic blues, soul, and rock & roll from the ’50s and ’60s, Los Angeles combo Vintage Trouble first found success in the U.K., where their debut album, 2011’s The Bomb Shelter Sessions, made a strong showing on the digital charts. Known for their passionate live shows and fusion of retro cool and modern swagger, the band spent the next several years earning a devoted fan base on both sides of the Atlantic thanks to key opening slots with rock legends like the Who, the Rolling Stones, and AC/DC, and the 2016 release of their Don Was-produced 1 Hopeful Rd.

Head Automatica w/ Foxy Shazam
9/10 | Great American Music Hall | 859 O’Farrell St, SF | 8:30 pm | $35-45

Head Automatica is the somewhat unlikely pairing of vocalist Daryl Palumbo (of New York City’s hardcore outfit Glassjaw) and producer Dan the Automator (aka Dan Nakamura of Gorillaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School). Introduced by mutual friends, the duo began work on their debut, aiming for a sound somewhere in between the Automator’s beats and squiggles and Palumbo’s penchant for rock and punk. When Decadence appeared in late summer 2004, its groove was just that — a bright and trashy mix of electronics and rock & roll, the kind of thing for which late nights were made.

Monday, 9/11

Plosivs | Broke-Ass Stuart’s Goddamn Website – SF Events (brokeassstuart.com)
9/11 | Bottom of the Hill | 1233 17th St, SF | 7:30 pm | $22-26

PLOSIVS, the brand new punk outfit featuring John Reis (Hot Snakes / Rocket From The Crypt / Drive Like Jehu), Rob Crow (Pinback), Atom Willard (Against Me!) and Jordan Clark (Mrs. Magician), are excited to present “Hit The Breaks,” the band’s first official offering. A song described as “a headfirst charge straight into the highest form of kinetic energy, be it sonic, fluid, or pure human euphoria,” “Hit The Breaks” was recorded on a day in October 2020 at Singing Serpent Studio with engineer Ben Moore at the controls.

Emily Catalano
9/11 | Punch Line | 444 Battery St, SF | 8 pm | $22.25

Emily is a comedian/filmmaker from San Francisco who is known for her sharp joke writing and veritable dead pan delivery. In 2019, she was selected as one of Timeout LA’s Comics to Watch. She is a regular at the Punch Line and Cobb’s Comedy Club, was a featured performer at Out of Bounds Comedy Festival in Austin, TX and selected as an Audible New Voice at SF Sketchfest. She regularly opens for Pete Holmes, and performs alongside Sarah Silverman, Tig Notaro, Judd Apatow, and Patton Oswalt at the Largo Theater in Los Angeles. In 2019, she made her late-night stand-up debut on CONAN and this year her stand-up was featured on The Drew Barrymore Show. She is currently developing a semi-autobiographical series with Sean Hayes’ Hazy Mills Productions and CBS Studios.

Strange Ranger w/ Chanel Beads
9/11 | Thee Parkside | 1600 17th St, SF | 8 pm | $15

Strange Ranger continue to excel at translating the way intimacy can feel so overwhelmingly gigantic. With a dozen releases across their 10 years as a band, the Philly-via-Portland-via-Montana group, currently featuring Isaac Eiger (guitars, vocals), Fred Nixon (bass, piano, vocals), Nathan Tucker (drums), and Fiona Woodman (vocals), have traversed genres, moods, and textures while maintaining one important throughline: an exploration of closeness.

Dead On A Sunday
9/11 | Rickshaw Stop | 155 Fell St, SF | 8 pm | $15

Dead On A Sunday, take emo to the next stage. Their brand of melancholic music has the right tones and will cater to the people who feel broken. Every lyric on this release means something too, and they all click in, giving the listener a chance to assess their own lives. The ache is real here too, and the band describes this ache so much that it becomes a pivotal part of the process. There’s also a spotlight on emotion, a light shining on the dark parts.
