SF Eviction Moratorium Extended To September 30, 2021
The San Francisco eviction moratorium was set to expire on June 30, barely a month from now. While landlords could not throw tenants out over unpaid rent during the pandemic, we were teetering just a month away from where they could, with the city being nowhere near back to full employment and many people still out of work.

But there’s a sigh of relief after last night’s Board of Supervisors meeting. The Chronicle reports that the Board of Supervisors unanimously voted 11-0 to extend the eviction moratorium until September 30, 2021.
“There will be an ongoing discussion about what happens when these temporary bans on evictions expire, but certainly we can’t have them expire right now just as people are starting to get back on their feet,” the measure’s co-sponsor, Sup. Dean Preston, told the Chronicle. “Now is absolutely not the time we should be opening the eviction floodgates.”
Yes, this does mean that many renters, while protected from possible eviction, will fall further and further behind on their back rent. But Gov. Gavin Newsom has set aside what is now a total of $5.2 billion for rent relief, though it is still unclear how that will be managed.
We should be clear that no one has been forgiven any rent yet, unless you made that deal with your landlord. But effective immediately, no one in San Francisco can be evicted for non-payment of rent until October 1. If your landlord is threatening to evict you over not paying rent, then talk to a tenant attorney.
