10 Tasty Eats Under $15 in San Francisco

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news
Beata Nazim of @modernpersianfood and my guide for all things delicious in SF displays a Piroshki from Cinderella Bakery and Cafe.

Inflation is absolutely brutal right now—eggs are expensive, gas prices are nauseating, and even the brunch bill can bring you to tears. With all that added pressure on my wallet, I’ve had to seriously reconsider my spending habits. But after working long days, sometimes you just need something quick and satisfying. So, I set some rules for myself: I wanted meals I could eat with two hands (like a squirrel holding a nut, they always look so happy) without making a mess.

And, of course, the price had to be under $15. Fortunately, San Francisco still offers some incredible handheld meals that fit the bill. Here’s a list of my favorites.

1. ArsicaultBakery
These croissants are a sacred vessel for butter and chocolate. If you’re in the mood for something savory, their bacon-heavy scones will make you swoon. The lines can be long, but the wait is definitely worth it.
397 Arguello, SF RICHMOND

2. Peasant Pies
Handheld savory pies packed with flavor are the name of the game here. I’m partial to the spinach and feta pie, but don’t overlook the traditional chicken pie either. It’s comfort in every bite.
1039 Irving Street, SF SUNSET

3. Cinderella Bakery
While the Russian breakfast and lunch options here are great, let’s talk Piroshkis. A whole glassed-in wall of golden, breaded, deep-fried or baked gems awaits. From vegetarian to carnivorous fillings, there’s something for everyone here.
436 Balboa Street, SF RICHMOND

4. Common Sage
This place is known for its Omusubi—a rice ball filled with various savory ingredients. Get a salmon, chashu pork, or ume rice ball Omusubi paired with a hojicha latte, and you’ll have the perfect quick meal.
1552 Polk St. SF Nob Hill

5. Ming Hui Dim Sum
The bao is the star here—fluffy buns stuffed with tasty fillings that’ll put a smile on your face. The dumplings are a must-try, too.
2495 San Bruno Ave.

6. Venga! Empanadas
Venga! serves up Argentine empanadas that are a treat for the taste buds. Whether you prefer meat, vegetarian, or gluten-free options, these savory delights always hit the spot.
443 Valencia St. SF MISSION & 50 Minna St. SF SOMA

7. El Porteño Empanadas
Found in the San Francisco Ferry Building, El Porteño serves up some of the best empanadas in the city, with both savory and sweet varieties. It’s one of the few truly affordable options in the Ferry Building.
One Ferry Building, San Francisco Embarcadero

8. El Yucateco Bakery
This spot in the Mission is perfect for hojaldra stuffed with ham and a variety of sweet Mexican pastries (pan dulces). Pair it with some tea or coffee, and you’ve got a satisfying meal for under $10.
2907 16th St, MISSION SF

9. Florecita Panadería
Craving a churro concha or something a little different? Florecita Panadería has a variety of conchas that will satisfy your sweet tooth, from matcha to chocolate. These are some of the best in the city.
2050 Bryant Street, SF MISSION

10. Kissako Tea
Kissako Tea, located in Japantown, serves up delicious onigiri—Japanese rice balls—in an array of flavors. It’s one of San Francisco’s best-kept secrets, but not for long. Grab one downstairs in the mall when hunger strikes.
1581 Webster St Ste 195. SF JAPANTOWN

San Francisco may be known for its pricey dining options, but with these tasty, affordable, handheld meals, you can satisfy your hunger without burning a hole in your wallet. Whether you’re craving a buttery croissant or a savory empanada, these spots deliver on both flavor and value. Have a favorite spot I missed? Feel free to share it in the comments!
