Summer is in full swing in the Bay Area, so get out of your house and hit some of the art events happening this month.  The end of July will feature the return of multiple fairs and festivals including the annual San Francisco Art Book Fair, Gray Area’s Annual Festival, and the stARTup Small Works Fair!

SADIE BARNETTE: FROM HERE
Oakland-based artist Sadie Barnette will discuss her creative practice which ranges from drawing, photography, to large-scale installation.  She will discuss material interventions and conceptual concerns engaging West Coast vernacular, family histories, a reclaimed FBI file, glitter, found objects, antiquated technologies and galactic escapes.

SIGNMAN: JOHN LAW, IN CONVERSATION SERIES
Three artists will discuss the shadowy world of UrbEx (urban exploration) and tell tales of their various (mis)adventures exploring worldwide over the last 25 years. And the dangers of perpetrating “illegal” art.  One of the featured artists, Ron English is a Painter and influential street artist and billboard hacker.

FAR OUT OPENING WEEKEND
Check out the opening for the SFMOMA’s newest show Far Out: Suits, Habs, and Labs for Outer Space this weekend and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.  This exhibition presents realized and conceptual designs for space suits, habitats, and laboratories alongside a selection of film and visual art, including designs from Rick Guidice, Raymond Loewy, NASA, Neri Oxman, Tom Sachs, and others.

LSG’S CREATIVE MUSIC SERIES

SF ART BOOK FAIR
The 2019 San Francisco Art Book Fair (SFABF) is an annual multi-day festival of artists’ publications. This event is free and open to the public and will feature artists’ books, art catalogs, monographs, periodicals, zines, printed ephemera, and artists’ multiples. These works will be presented by over 100 independent publishers, antiquarian dealers, artists, collectors, and enthusiasts.

STARTUP SMALL WORKS 2019
stARTup Small Works is a “tabletop” style art fair in a large creative complex for select contemporary artists to show small-scale works ranging from sculptures, paintings, and drawings, to prints and ceramics. Its core mission is to provide artists with direct access to the art world, and an exhibition venue populated by dealers, curators, collectors, and consultants–all of whom are coming to San Francisco to discover and buy art from some of the best independent artists working today.

23RD ANNUAL URBAN YOUTH ARTS FESTIVAL
Each year, the Urban Youth Arts Festival sets up a huge community painting wall in Precita Park for artists of all ages to express themselves, along with music and fun – typically with over 500 feet of wall space.  There will also be a Community Mural Painting Station, so bring your spray cans or acrylics to paint on the wall.

BONANZA // THAT’S FUNNY
“That’s Funny” invites artists and comedians to perform short sets of comedic material on a set designed by Bonanza as a celebration of comedy’s potential for posturing and resilience.  This performance is part of “Performance as Edition,” curated by visual artist Jonn Herschend for the McEvoy Foundation for the Arts‘ exhibition “What is an edition, anyway?” on view May 24 – September 7, 2019.

CHINGA LA MIGRA FUNDRAISER
This fundraiser event will benefit a variety of causes: Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA): a local, membership-based Latina immigrant community organizing and empowerment program; No More Deaths/No Más Muertes: a strong force along the AZ/MX border; and Scott Warren. NMD: a humanitarian aid volunteer who is receiv ing felonies for providing aid!  There will be music, merch, raffles, and other goodies from local artists/ makers and doers!

ART OF PEACE
Join Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), United Playaz, and the Robby Poblete Foundation to celebrate the opening of Art of Peace, a group exhibition that aims to raise awareness about the continued escalation of death in our country due to senseless gun violence.  Exploring the stories of 10 local artists and collectives who have been affected by gun violence, Art of Peace features sculptural artworks made from dismantled firearms, including shotgun barrels, revolvers, rifle stocks, shell casings, handgun parts, and more collected off the streets of San Francisco through a December 2018 gun buyback program that gathered a total of 244 guns.

Join Gray Area for the 5th edition of its annual festival, where you can immerse yourself in four days of art, music, technology, and culture.  There will be the crazy robotic music performance Inferno— imagine you’re Ripley in the Power Loader from Aliens only the machine is controlling your every move!  There will also be the stunning ISM Hexadome, a 360° cinema installed at historic Pier 70 featuring audiovisual collaborations by artists including Thom Yorke & Tarik Barri, Holly Herndon & Mathew Dryhurst, Suzanne Ciani & AudeRrose, and more.

KATE RHOADES’ ART ON MARKET STREET
For the San Francisco Arts Commission’s latest Art on Market Street Poster Series artist Kate Rhoades illustrates the City’s best-known urban legends in an attempt to capture and preserve the City’s legendary “weirdness.”  Each of the posters is illustrated with bold dramatic colors and looks like something straight out of a comic book.
