Bake Muffins & Fight Homelessness on National Muffin Day!

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

BY JACOB “MUFFIN MAN” KAUFMAN

National Muffin Day is coming up on Sunday, February 21!  Normally we bake together with big kitchen parties and distribute muffins to people experiencing homelessness, but like everything else in the world, things are different this year.  While we are thrilled with the roll-out of the vaccine, physically handing out muffins is not safe for the givers or receivers right now, and so we ask that people refrain from such activity.  Instead, we are asking that people bake muffins in their homes and give them to their families, podmates, or neighbors — or just eat them for themselves. Then, donate money to a cause that benefits people experiencing homelessness — like Project Homeless Connect.

Plus, for each person who participates (and lets me know by taking a picture of their muffins and posting to social media with the hashtag #givemuffins), Jacob the Muffin Man will donate $5 each to PHC and Family Promise, and get matching from several sources. In the first National Muffin Day we had 70 participants, but it’s grown and the last 2 years we’ve had over 500, raising donations of over $40,000!

In order to facilitate participation, there are also a number of fun events associated with National Muffin Day in 2021:

  • Saturday, February 13th, 11 AM – 12 PM Pacific Time: Youth Organize & Unite (YOU) Workshop featuring speakers on homelessness and housing equity.  YOU is an awesome organization started by Jacob’s cousin that is all about getting young people (middle school through college) into activism!  So if you know any folks who fall into that target demographic, please invite them to this event!  Details (including registration) here.
  • Friday, February 19th, 1 PM – 1:20 PM Pacific Time: Facebook Live with Family Promise. Watch Jacob & Julia (founders of National Muffin Day) talk with Claas Ehlers, CEO of Family Promise, one of the beneficiaries of National Muffin Day donations. At the Family Promise Facebook page (which you should totally like!).
  • Saturday, February 20th, 1 PM – 2 PM Pacific Time: Ask Me Anything with an Unhoused Person. I know a lot of us have lots of questions about homelessness, so this year as a special event we have partnered with Miracle Messages to put together an “ask me anything (AMA)” session with Elizabeth Softky, who has been unhoused for a while.  She has graciously volunteered her time for what will definitely be an unforgettable experience.  Please register here.
  • Sunday, February 21st, 1 PM – 2 PM Paciffic Time: National Muffin Day Baking Party with Jacob & Julia!  Join us for the biggest party of the season, where we bake muffins, laugh, tell stories, dance, and all that fun stuff.  We’ll even send ingredient lists in advance so you can bake with us!  Please register here.

We write for busboys, poets, social workers, students, artists, musicians, magicians, mathematicians, maniacs, yodelers and everyone else out there who wants to enjoy life not as a rich person, but as a real person. Namely, we write for you.

We’re currently looking to expand our author pool. If you’re snarky, know what’s happening in your town, and good at making your fingers type out funny words, then you might be just the person we’re looking for. Email alex@brokeassstuart.com with some writing samples if you're interested. Cheers
