Brooklyn Lyceum Fair and Derby Day Party

Now that the weather is finally cooperating it’s time to slip on something revealing and finally expose your pallid extremities to some actual sunlight. Because let’s face it, pasty skin only sparkles in teen bop vampire movies. Lucky for you, this city is experiencing an influx of outdoor markets on the weekends where you can shop, eat, and booze all in one place.  Entering the fray, is Brooklyn Lyceum Food and Craft Market. Culling its vendors from all over the country, this market focuses on unique handmade goods as well as fresh food specialites. Nosh on homemade mac n cheese, mini quiches and sourdough waffles (yes please) while you peruse the 10,000 square feet of this former bathhouse. If you’re a print fan like myself, there will also be silk-screening on the premises where you can customize anything from bags, tees, and pillowcases. The fair kicks off at 11 and be sure to slap on some sunscreen because there’s nothing more unsightly than v-neck shaped sunburns.

Just like with all sports, horse racing is just another excuse to drink, gamble, and wear a silly outfit. While my knowledge of horse racing is limited to watching the movie Seabiscuit and blacking out at Preakness once, I love drinking mint julips and wearing a silly hat as much as the next broad.  There is plenty of southern-inspired merry making across the city, and while the Bell House’s epic themed event is sold out, just mosey on over to Union Hall for their Derby Day Party. There’s a backyard cook-out along with $5 mint julips, red neck themed games and a $100 prize for best hat. Your hipster straw fedora does NOT count, get creative! Festivities kick off at noon today, and naturally since I’m writing about it, it’s FREE.
