A Day in Paris: Without the Touristy Madness

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Whether you’re done soaking up the excitement of the games in Paris (I just was—hello, Badminton!), heading there for the Special Olympics starting at the end of August, or planning a fall getaway, this one-day itinerary is designed to make your City of Lights experience unforgettable.

With endless choices for amazing food, stunning walks, and unique shopping, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed—after all, this is Paris! So, put on your favorite red lipstick, cue up the incredible French electronic pop singer Zaho De Sagazan (she’s playing at SF’s Independent on 12/19/24!), and dive into this guide, your go-to companion for discovering a side of Paris that goes beyond the usual French flair.

The Heart of Parisian Cool

Consider staying near Canal St. Martin or in the northeastern part of Paris—my favorite area, away from the Olympic hub. Here, you’ll find fewer crowds and barricades, and more hidden street magic and underground allure.

A major bonus is the easy access to nature spots like Buttes Chaumont and Belleville. These vibrant neighborhoods are buzzing with diversity, eclectic energy, and hip vibes, offering a genuine taste of Parisian life amidst stunning architecture and greenery, without the tourist madness.

Hotel Recommendations:

Babel Belleville: A modern Moroccan-inspired hotel with eco-friendly touches. Just gorgeous!

Novotel in Belleville: A classic French chain offering urban chic simple rooms and a fantastic breakfast buffet.

Hôtel Les Deux Gares: Just steps from Gare du Nord and Canal St. Martin, this hotel dazzles with vibrant, mixed-pattern wallpaper and features a sauna and workout room. A year later, and I’m still daydreaming about that interior design.

Explore, Eat, and Embrace the Right Bank

Morning:

Start the best day of your life (JK, not JK) with a leisurely stroll through Buttes Chaumont—a beautiful park jam packed with hills, views, playgrounds, lakes, and grottos. Yes, all of that, in one Parisian park. Then, head back toward Canal St. Martin, one of the lesser known iconic places to explore. Who doesn’t adore a canal mid-city?

Breakfast:

Round Egg Buns: Indulge in a variety of mouthwatering egg sandwiches at this SoCal inspired skater vibe joint. Literally, can’t get enough of this menu. Top choice is the Sunny Smash. The French elevate everything, even the classic American breakfast sandwich.

Buddy Buddy: Savor a stellar coffee made with nut butters (plant-based milk), and pick up some homemade versions of said amazing nut butters to take home (actual nut butters, not milk).

Late Morning:

With your belly bursting, take a long walk to Sacre Coeur, to work that hunger back up. Yes, tourists abound because this is a legendary cathedral with sweeping Parisian views, but the surrounding hilly streets offer charming boutique shopping and gelato that are also worth the trek.

Snack Break:

La Manufacture du Sans Gluten: For those with gluten-free needs, this spot is a gem! Think croissants (with or without chocolate), apple turnovers, baguettes, breads, and pizzas, all with crispy buttery goodness. Pro tip: DM Jerome to pre-order vacuum-sealed goodies to bring home.

Amorino Gelato Al Naturale: This chain doesn’t disappoint. You can choose as many flavors as you like, and they’ll craft them into delicate rose petals, leaving you with a beautiful, edible flower of ice cream deliciousness. Can you imagine, unlimited flavors? #unheardof.

Afternoon Shopping:

Rue des Martyrs: A street so notable it inspired a book. Browse boutiques, cafes, and shops along this vibrant strip. Sample cheeses, drink a glass of Pet Nat and enjoy! If you’re not familiar with Pet Nat (Pétillant Naturel), look it up and thank me later—or better yet, tune in to my podcast on the topic.

Le 54: Pop into this quirky store for oversized graphic Tees, neon skirts and fun jewelry. Just snagged a T-shirt as a tribute to Kamala (“Babes Support Babes”, am I right?)! LFG.

Evening:

Return to Canal St. Martin (once is never enough). As the sun sets, the canal comes alive with picnics, music, and locals reveling in the scene. It’s perfect for people-watching, catching live tunes, and soaking in Parisian life. Last month, we were lucky to catch this gal and her friends. Bravo Lora!

Dinner:

Gros Bao: Feast on fantastic Chinese dumplings, noodles, and veggies, in a cute kitsch atmosphere. Don’t miss the chili spice and Bao vinegar sauce—grab a bottle to go! Plus, they only serve natural wine, a total treat. Classic France.

After-Dinner Drinks:

Chez Prune: Wind down your day, or grab dessert at this old-school French café/bar, perfectly situated on the canal.

Wrap-Up
