Man Feared Dead After Falling Overboard From Cruise Ship Ahead Of Arrival In San Francisco

A 72-year-old American man is believed to have fallen overboard from the cruise ship Ruby Princess early on Monday, December 1st. As the vessel approached San Francisco after completing a five-day round trip to Ensenada, Mexico. The incident was reported around 6:50 a.m., just hours before the ship’s scheduled arrival in San Francisco.

In a statement, Princess Cruises confirmed the tragic event, saying, “We are saddened to report that a 72-year-old American male is believed to have gone overboard ahead of Ruby Princess’s arrival into San Francisco.” The man was traveling alone, according to the cruise line, and authorities now fear the worst. While his identity has not yet been released, the cruise line expressed its “heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the individual,” according to People Magazine.

The ship’s crew and authorities immediately launched a comprehensive search for the missing passenger. According to NBC News, the cruise line conducted multiple thorough sweeps of the ship and meticulously reviewed CCTV footage to determine what might have occurred. After ruling out other possibilities, the incident is now being officially treated as a man overboard case.

Throughout the day, Princess Cruises worked closely with local authorities to coordinate the search and gather additional information. Despite these extensive efforts, no trace of the man has been found. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency has since taken over the investigation.

The cruise line, emphasized its cooperation with authorities during this challenging time. In a statement to ABC News, Princess Cruises shared its sorrow over the situation, extending its sympathies to the man’s loved ones and acknowledging the emotional toll this incident has likely caused.

The Ruby Princess, part of the Princess Cruises fleet, had been on a routine round-trip journey between San Francisco and Ensenada, offering passengers a leisurely five-day getaway. The tragic incident has cast a shadow over the voyage, highlighting the rare but serious risks associated with cruise travel.
