See the Wattstax Movie for FREE

I know all you Bay Area folks are probably out in the sun, getting down with your gayness right now and not looking at your computer.  But for those of you who do end up checking the site, there’s an awesome event Monday night.

In my opinion, Stax Records was probably, if not the best record label of all time, definitely towards the top of the list.  Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, William Bell, The Staples Singers, and Booker T & the MGs were just some of the amazing acts that Stax put out throughout the 60s and 70s.  Fuck I love this music.

In 1972 Stax records presented a huge one day concert in Watts to commemorate the 7th anniversary of the Watts riots.  Wattstax was billed as “the Black Woodstock” and not only featured tons of the label’s artists, but also stand up comedy from Richard Pryor and was hosted by Rev. Jesse Jackson.  Umm, yeah, it’s supposed to be awesome.  I say “supposed to be” because I haven’t actually seen it yet, even though I do have the great soundtrack.

Anyways, if you’re like me and really want to see this flick, but don’t have netflix, Monday night is your chance.  Cafe Royale is playing it as part of their “Incredibly Strange Picture Show” series (which also shows Sid and Nancy on July 15th).  My guess is that there will be some kind of drink specials going on too.  But the best part of the night is getting to see Jess Jackson and Isaac Hayes dressed like this.
