The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Want to avoid the concert chaos that will be occurring in Golden Gate Park this weekend? Are you like me and still can’t figure out why anyone would spend a month’s grocery budget on a concert where Phish is playing 2 sets? Do not fret there is an entirely free street festival taking place in Japantown this weekend.

The annual Nihomachi street festival is celebrating its 38th year this weekend in Japantown. With the added focus of trying to raise both awareness and funds for the people of Northern Japan that are still dealing with the after effects of this year’s disaster. Since admission to the festival is FREE you should be able to find a few doubloons you can throw down for a good cause. This year’s festival features 2 stages for live entertainment that will feature a variety of acts from eleven to five both days, as well as more delicious food vendors than you can shake a stick at.

If you make your way out to Japantown this weekend you can expect good food, good music and all of it is going down for a good cause. What you won’t see is sketchy people trying to sell you homemade “special” brownies and hula hoop dancing.

You can head HERE for a full list of participants and the entertainment schedule for the weekend.

FREE August 13th and 14th 11am – 6pm [Japantown] Post and Fillmore

Growing up in Marin, Hugh joined the throngs of suburbanites that dream of being rock stars and movie gods only to end up in a well appointed cubicle. Now Hugh lives in San Francisco and casually ignores his environmental studies degree, choosing to write comedy and eat burritos instead.
