Tradesman Bar: Class You Can Afford

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Tradesman opened with a bang last Thursday! If you read the Yelp reviews, one person said it was so crowded it was hard to even make it to the bar. But on Sunday, when I went, I was able to enjoy the cozy candlelit atmosphere, the wonderful service, and the cheap prices. And with the East Williamsburg community welcoming the new establishment with open arms, I believe Tradesman is a spot that’s there to stay.

During the happy hour all drafts are $4 ($4-$6 during off hours), all house liquors are $5 (add a dollar during off hours) and all cans are $3 (add a dollar during off hours). But this isn’t your normal PBR, Miller Highlife, Budweiser kinda bar. Many of their liquors, and all of their drafts, are from local or independently owned distilleries and breweries, which I love! They supply beers from NY breweries like Greenport Harbor and Ommegang, and liquors from NY distilleries like Harvest Spirits (vodka made from apples) and Tuthilltown Spirits (NY’s first whiskey distillery since prohibition). Also, if you ask the barkeep for the beer and shot combo, you’ll get a Rheingold and an Old Crow for $5. C’mon, this place has got taste!

Another perk to this bar is the massive backyard! There is still construction going on, but from my understanding it will be open very soon. What will also be open in the near future – probably by early summer – is the kitchen, which will be cooking-up handmade pierogies, salads and sandwiches, etc., with all ingredients purchased from local farmer’s markets.

So… go to Tradesman, and keep going! This is an independent business supporting other independent businesses, and it’s a beautiful thing!

Bobby dropped out of college at the age of 20, said goodbye to his papaw in the small town of Copper Hill, GA, and went to India, where he studied professional pauperism in ashrams and taught English to children. From New Delhi he flew to London, where emigration considered him a "vagabond with no roots to return to", and he was put on the first plane back to America. After finding himself in the freezing snows of Chicago, some guy at a bar offered him a job transporting a car to NYC, where he is currently stuck in Ridgewood, Queens. His travel website The Music Underground has helped many find the obscure in foreign lands.
