How You Can Get Congress to Act on Climate Change

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

Climate change is real, it’s here, and it’s frightening. We need our government to step up and make major changes. Luckily there’s a petition going around to help make them do so.

From hurricane damage to forest fires, natural disasters are devastating communities. Right now, The House of Representatives has a historic opportunity to pass legislation that will turn the tide on climate change and invest in the infrastructure needed to build resilient communities.

The bipartisan infrastructure bill – known formally as the “Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act” – was recently passed by the Senate and is now in the hands of the House of Representatives. Once the House passes the bill, it will go to President Biden for his signature.

This bill represents a foundation for continued transformation in America toward clean and efficient energy and climate action. It provides billions of dollars in grants, programs, and funding to restore ecosystems, rebuild industries, and innovate for a clean and sustainable future.

The bill includes:

  • $21 billion to clean up America’s legacy pollution, including reclaiming abandoned mines, plugging orphan oil wells, and cleaning up brownfield and superfund sites.
  • $7.5 billion for alternative fuel development and to build out the national network of electric charging stations with a particular focus on rural and hard-to-reach communities.
  • Over $25 billion for investments in the electric grid.
  • $7.5 billion for low-carbon and zero-emission public transportation.
  • Over $4 billion for state and federal energy efficiency programs.
  • Programs to deploy private sector money on clean energy, energy efficiency and the electric grid.

America needs modern energy infrastructure to maintain industrial leadership and remain competitive in the global economy. This bill makes a down payment on the infrastructure needed for a low-carbon economy and will help both reduce emissions and improve water and air quality for all Americans.

Let’s all sign this petition demanding that Congress pass this crucial, bipartisan legislation to mitigate the impact of climate change and create resilient communities.
