This Might Be The Bay Area’s Premiere Bagel Shop

With all the talk of bagel revolutions happening in the Bay Area, a standout just opened its precious doors in Oakland. Poppy Bagels debuted in February 2023 in the food-chic Temescal neighborhood. If there is indeed a revolution afoot, Poppy Bagels might be the hero leading the charge.

Owner Reesa Kashuk was homesick for east coast bagel texture, so she went ahead and brought that classic bagel making prowess to the west coast. Each bagel is handmade, lending to a spirit of homage in the air with such bagel flavors as the salt and pepper and the two-sided drenched namesake the Poppy. You can order their now legendary farmers market sandwiches including the one with scallion cream cheese and the one that marries savory black truffle chive cream cheese with sweet local honey. Or take home a dozen or fewer assorted bagels with everyone’s favorite cream cheese. Notable examples include the briny, laden with pickles and capers, or for a little heat try the jalapeno serrano . You will probably make a new friend in the line that stems from the Telegraph Avenue shop, as the revolution has obviously been televised.
