Brooklyn Flea Superstar DJ Record Fair and Book Festival

The Bay's best newsletter for underground events & news

The Brooklyn Flea has become a mecca for vintage lovers, collectors, and foodies alike. It’s moved around quite a bit, and it’s customers come from all over the city to scour for high end and low end wares. If you’ve never been to the Brooklyn Flea, man are you missing out. And since the city is pretty much pissing itself with excitement over fashion week ( I work in Meatpacking so maybe I’m biased), you too can flaunt your sartorial flair without having to go anywhere near Bryant Park. Brooklyn Flea will be hosting a special vintage fashion and records bazaar under the Manhattan Bridge in Dumbo. Music nerds can elbow their way through the crates while the ladies can check out a carefully edited selection of vintage fashions. Plus the food there is always ridiculously good.

After you’ve blown your wad at the fair, it’s time to hit the books, at the Brooklyn Book Festival. With over 200 authors, readings, lectures, and book booths, it can be quite daunting. Most of the readings and lectures will take place at the Brooklyn Borough Hall and Plaza. Some events are ticketed, some are not, but most of them are free if you score tickets an hour ahead of each event. Most of Montague Street will be closed down and open to local food vendors who will be handing out free samples all day. This way you can stop hovering around Trader Joe’s like an idiot. Lecture topics include the literary legacies of John Updike, David Foster Wallace and Norman Mailer. Talks also cover modern journalism topics of music writing, food culture , poetry and even comics. But don’t worry, Stephanie Meyer and the Twihard’s won’t be there. Check out the site for a detailed schedule of events.

Laura S - Spendthrift Scribe

Laura S, left the "sixth borough" three years ago to settle in Brooklyn. After working at some daily rags, she now does writing on the side but still eats more Ramen then necessary. When she's not moving residences every 6 months, eating her way through every neighborhood, and trying every microbrew known to man, she is unsuccessfully rediscovering home economics. With her binging days behind her, she's now exploring new projects and rediscovering the city that she loves (although is still prone to sliding on her knees during a Prince karaoke set).
